Whither Weather?

how's winter treating you?

On Groundhog’s Day my husband joked that the little guy came out of his hole and declared that winter had already been over for six weeks.

Anyone else feel like the season is missing this year? Here in Michigan, we usually get buried by at least a couple snowstorms each year, and have a week or two of single-digit temperatures. Those things have not happened this winter. We’ve had rain instead, and... READ MORE

Choosing Favorites

A little observation

I have noticed something lately, a funny little detail about being a mom and running the show and making lots of choices. Here it is: when it comes to making decisions, I choose what I like best.

That probably sounds like a no brainer, but it has occurred to me lately that I might be inadvertently training my children to have the same yens as me. When I reach for the yogurt at the grocery store, I... READ MORE

Pans Under the Tree?

Share your thoughts on practical gifts

My husband and I had been married for one Christmas, or maybe two, when some family friends gave us one of their tips for a happy marriage.

“No gifts that plug in!” the wife admonished Bryan laughingly, wagging a finger in the air.

Over the years I’ve often thought of that moment as I’ve opened gifts by the tree. Some of my favorites have broken that rule - like the year when my husband went way over... READ MORE

'Tis the Season

for Christmas card pictures - what do you like?

Since it’s December, one of the things on my to-do list is Christmas cards. It’s a multi-part process: writing the accompanying letter, ordering the cards, making sure we have enough stamps, actually stuffing and addressing the pile that seems to grow as we work.

But for me, by far the most daunting part is obtaining the dreaded Christmas Card Picture.

I only have two children to photograph, so you’d... READ MORE

Dressed for Autumn

What do you wear in the cooler weather?

Summer is officially coming to a close here in Michigan. Last Sunday we sweated through Mass, this weekend we had to bring jackets.

I abhor the heat of summer, so I’m thrilled that cooler weather is on its way. We’ll still have some hot days, but for the most part those are over until next year.

One of my favorite things about fall is the clothes. Since our resident fashion blogger is on maternity... READ MORE

Bananano

What flavor grosses you out?

This evening my sister and I were shopping at a discount store that has bags of various specialty candies by the checkout.

I picked up one or two and looked them over, then reached for a bag that was backward on the shelf.

My sister laughed as I let out a little shriek and dropped it when I realized what it contained: banana gummy candy.

I’ve been known to enjoy the occasional gummy bear (the clear... READ MORE

How do you handle telephone solicitors?

Before the advent of the Do Not Call registry, I vaguely remember telemarketers calling the house a lot. My parents hated it.

These days it’s easier, since only charities can legally call and ask for money. But if you’re anything like us, those calls still come on a fairly regular basis.

We have caller ID, so it’s pretty easy to avoid talking to solicitors by screening the calls. Since some of them... READ MORE

Baby Out or Baby In?

How do you feel about the end of pregnancy?

My sister is pregnant. Fully pregnant, since she was due this past Saturday.

Her first baby was a month early and her second eight days late. With this third baby, she was hoping to go early again, but no dice. She seems resigned to her baby’s late-ish arrival, but I know she’s greeting each morning wishing it will be the day.

I have no experience with this, since my babies were born at 10 days and... READ MORE

Sock-foot or Barefoot?

What's your preference?

In summer, I eschew socks.

Occasionally my exercise footwear requires socks, but when the activity ends I immediately sit and rip them off, and my feet and I are both relieved and happy for the resultant breath of fresh air. Other than when exercising, I am completely sock-free during the warmer months.

I mentioned to my husband that I’ve gone at least a week at a time without wearing socks. He looked... READ MORE

Buying Water

A choice I never imagined I'd make

I’m loving reading everyone’s responses to Rachel’s post about grocery shopping. There’s so much variety. Fun!

My own response is that I know it’s time for a grocery store trip when we’re running low on juice, milk, or water. But as I wrote that I realized it might seem weird. How can you run low on water, especially when you live in the Great Lakes State?

Here’s how: we buy water.

It is neither frugal... READ MORE
