Fill 'Em Up!

How do you do it?

Do you do Christmas stockings at your house?

During my childhood we did. My mom filled them with the fun stuff for us - little toys when we were younger, hair bands and stationery when we were older - and since we didn’t get to open our big presents until after Christmas morning Mass, the stockings helped tide us over. We enjoyed them.

But now that I’m a mother myself and dealing with the fight against... READ MORE

Christmas Storing

Is yours done yet?

Now that we’re back into Ordinary Time, it’s confession time.

Here’s mine: although December 25th was almost three weeks ago, we STILL have Christmas presents sitting in boxes in our living room.

I know!

I’d love to claim the stress of pregnancy as the reason for my disorganization, but I can’t lie. It’s like this every year. In fact, before we had kids, we were even worse at putting away the gifts.... READ MORE

Not The Sharpest Knife In The Drawer

It’s probably wrong to have a crush on a kitchen knife, but I do.

For years I have loathed chopping vegetables.

That is, until this past fall, when I was cooking dinner in my sister’s house and had to dice an onion.

It wasn’t that big a deal, but I started in aware that I was about to do something annoying.

Except it wasn’t annoying at all, it was astonishingly easy.

Then and during the course... READ MORE

What Did You Give? What Did You Get?

Tell us about this year's winning gifts!

After spending so much time and energy thinking about, shopping for, and wrapping Christmas gifts over the past few weeks, I thought it might be fun to do a bit of a gift assessment today.

Did you give anything that was especially fun or well-received this year?

Did anyone give you anything especially touching or thrilling?

I can give us a start ...

The most fun and unexpected present Dan gave me... READ MORE

Secret Santa Solutions

Casual Fridays asks "What to buy for coworkers?"

I remember back when I worked in an office, I always sort of dreaded the annual “secret Santa” mania that surrounded gift exchange situations with co-workers. I would always spend a few weeks thinking about a gift that would be appropriate, desirable, and within the suggested price range.  I also had a “fun” time shopping for gifts for the employees I supervised.  Coming up with a “one size fits all”... Don't Want to Brave the Mall?

Take advantage of free shipping from online retailers!

Some people have their Christmas shopping done, and those people should receive a hearty pat on the back.

But for those of us who haven’t yet finished, and who (like me) dread the thought of setting foot in a mall during this crazily busy time of year, never fear! There is another option.

Over at freeshippingday.com, they’ve gathered a list of online retailers - 678 in total - who will be offering free shipping promotions tomorrow, Thursday, December 17th.

Some of them will have minimum purchase requirements in order to qualify for free shipping, but the site says that more than half will offer free shipping on all purchases. With delivery by Christmas Eve, that’s a great deal for the mall-haters among us.

Hop over to freeshippingday.com to check it out! Maybe you can get your shopping finished tomorrow.

What Made the Birthday Boy Happy

a wooden tool kit for a little carpenters

Phew!

We Beans end every summer with a slew of birthdays, but Daniel’s 3rd birthday last week marked the end of our celebrating until November.

One of the gifts we gave to Daniel was such a success that I thought I’d share it with you here: It was the Melissa & Doug Wooden Take-Along 24-piece Tool Kit.

This is the second one of these sets we’ve bought (the last one was many years ago and the pieces... READ MORE

He’s Gotta Secret

I should have known better

One of the boys is celebrating a birthday this week, and all the talk seems to be focused on the upcoming celebration. We have been discussing themes (a wrestling party), desserts (chocolate cake with a wrestling mask on top), and of course presents (fortunately, no requests for wrestling outfits).

As an aside, I’d like to mention that we are not big WWF fans around here. The love of wrestling stems... READ MORE

Christmas Shopping

How do you like to do it?

I’ve had some very productive days of Christmas shopping this week.

The best part about it is that I’ve been able to accomplish it all from the comfort of my own living room.

Perhaps some of you are shocked that I am still working on my shopping a mere two weeks before Christmas.  Trust me: I am a major procrastinator.  The fact that I have even *started* my shopping at this point puts me way ahead... READ MORE
