True Faith

What is Catholicism all about?

Our parish got a new priest last weekend, a priest reassigned to our parish to replace the outgoing priest.

This will be our third priest in five years (our tenth priest in thirty years) and it’s hard not to wonder what in the world in wrong with us. How do we keep scaring off these men so quickly?

The truth is there is a whole host of issues at our parish, none of which I’ll go into here. But that’s... READ MORE

Fr. Corapi's Goodbye Announcement

I know that many of you have followed Fr. Corapi and the story of the accusations against him. Today comes the sad announcement that he is leaving the priesthood. You can read his announcement here or listen to it in the video.

Let us pray for everyone involved in this sad and strange story, Fr. Corapi, and for all of our priests.

...And A Side Of Confession

http://vintagemetalart.com

My friend Fr. Richard, stationed in the Bronx, posted a Facebook status I can’t resist sharing.

I’m starving and stop to grab a slice. A pretty woman’s got a splinter in her eye. Picture 5 pizza guys hustling to help get it out. Don’t ask me why, but she tells me she hasn’t been to confession since she was a kid. So I say let’s do it.
“Here?”
“Well, my car is right there.”
We sit in my Mini and take care of business. Coming to my Mass Sunday. Spirit blows where he wills. Ain’t it so?
Yeah, my slice got cold.

Hilarious and wonderful, no?

Ask a Priest vol. 16

Further Thoughts on Last Week’s Question:

Q: I am a mom of a 14 year old son. He talks quite a bit with his dad about sports and school and such, but clams up with me. I don’t have this problem with my two older daughters. I would love to help encourage him to grow in his faith life, but am I being unrealistic? Should a mom expect a more “distant” faith relationship with her son?

In Part I of the answer to this excellent question,... READ MORE

Friendly Reminder: Go to Confession!

Get the grace that's waiting for you

We all need spiritual nudges now and then.

And when it comes to the sacrament of reconciliation, some of us need a really big nudge (read: kick in the pants) to get ourselves there.

I used to aim for going to confession once a month. That meant that in reality, I got there every 2-3 months. No good.

So now I aim for every 2 weeks. And that means I do usually get there about once a month. Every once... READ MORE

Children Can Celebrate Year of the Priest

Free resource for families

Rachel Watkins, the fab mom who brought us Little Flowers Girls Clubs, has put together a new resource for Catholic families celebrating the Year of the Priest.

Says Rachel: “This new activity sheet is available as an absolutely free download to any family looking for concrete ways in which to celebrate this great year. It gives ideas for families, clubs, or individuals to celebrate this wonderful year and includes an opportunity to award certificates of completion and/or medals if desired.”

Read more about it and get the free download at the Ecce Homo Press website.

And while your family is learning about and praying for our priests this year, don’t forget to take advantage of the opportunity for a Plenary Indulgence during the Year of the Priest. Go get some graces!

Father Theodore Heck, OSB - Growing Old with a God Loving Heart

I just discovered this interesting article on CNN about Father Theodore Heck, OSB who died on Wednesday at the age of 108. The article states that until recently his memory was very good. During the course of his lifetime he read thousands of books all of which he carefully wrote down and kept track of.

This quote from the CNN article shows just how alert he was until almost the very end.

What Would You Like to Ask a Priest?

Here's your chance!

One of the most popular suggestions that has come up recently on our Faith & Family feedback page is “Have a priest who could answer questions.”

Well ... JACKPOT! We already have two.

Two of our regular features in Faith and Family Magazine are Spiritual Directions and By the Book. In Spiritual Directions, Fr. Richard Gill, LC answers reader questions about personal challenges, faith, and spirituality. In By the Book, Canonist Dominican Father Juan-Diego Brunetta answers questions about official Church practice.

We always solicit your questions for these features in the magazine, but now we’re opening the blog to them as well. So ... let’s hear it. What do you want to know? What do you want to ask a priest?
