Prayers for Papa Benedict

on his 60th anniversary

I saw these prayers on ibreviary, which said “the following indulgenced prayer may be said in thanksgiving for the 60th anniversary of the priesthood of our Holy Father.”

Families could work this in with grace before dinner tonight, or with daily family prayers:

Let us pray for Pope Benedict: May the Lord preserve him, give him life, make him blessed upon earth; and not deliver him up to the will of his enemies.

Let us Pray

Father of providence, look with love on Benedict our Pope, your appointed successor to St. Peter on whom you built your Church.  May he be the visible center and foundation of our unity in faith and love. Grant this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns wit you and the Holy Spirit one God forever and ever. Amen.

New Priests, By the Numbers

A look at those seeking ordination

I’m a big “numbers” girl, so I really enjoyed reading this great article today looking at the “graduating” class of priests who will be ordained in 2011.

The survey in question is the The Class of 2011: Survey of Ordinands to the Priesthood conducted by the Georgetown University Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate (CARA), and commissioned by the USCCB’s Secretariat of Clergy, Consecrated... READ MORE

Watching To Do Good

papal advice for the Sacred Triduum

At yesterday’s audience, the Holy Father offered some advice about how to live the next three days.

He offers a brief explanation of the various rites and their origins.

Explaining the genesis of adoration at the altar of repose which will take place this evening, the Pope recounts Christ’s withdrawal into Gethsemane after the Last Supper:

Conscious of his imminent death on the cross, he felt great... READ MORE

Priestly Statistics

Interesting survey on latest ordinands

A recent study put out by the USCCB finds that 92 percent of men who will be ordained to the priesthood this year held full-time jobs before entering seminary. The study also found that the median age of those being ordained this year is 33, and there are eleven men being ordained who are over the age of 65.

Other interesting facts: 37 percent have a relative who is a priest or religious; over 65... READ MORE

Benedict At Fatima

Last night the Holy Father consecrated the world’s priests to Our Lady of Fatima.

Here is his beautiful prayer of consecration.

I think the final stanza is particularly lovely:

“Let your presence cause new blooms to burst forth
in the desert of our loneliness,
let it cause the sun to shine on our darkness,
let it restore calm after the tempest,
so that all mankind shall see the salvation
of the Lord,... READ MORE

Priesthood Sunday

Have you thanked your priest lately?

Sunday, October 25 marks Priesthood Sunday. On this day, Catholics across the country are encouraged to do something special for their priest to show their gratitude for his leadership and service to the Church.

Some ideas include: saying a rosary for your priest; baking something as a gift for your priest; or even just taking the time after Mass to tell your priest how much you appreciate his yes... READ MORE

Building the Priesthood

we can all foster vocations

Rebecca’s discussion of the upcoming Year of the Priest reminded me of an article I read in the National Catholic Register a few years ago.

In it, Register senior writer Tim Drake looked at a recent surge in vocations, and noted several dioceses that seem to be especially thriving. Of course, one of the reasons I remember the article so well is that my own diocese, The Diocese of Savannah, was featured... READ MORE

World Day of Prayer for Vocations
Sisters of Life at World Youth Day 2008

On this World Day of Prayer for Vocations, Elizabeth Scalia (aka The Anchoress) has written an inspiring post about the future of vocations to the priesthood and religious life—with a thoughtful reflection on the significance of wearing the habit.

You read Pope Benedict’s message for today here (pdf).

“Pray therefore the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest” (Mt 9:38)

Chrism Mass in Rome

what does it mean to be a priest?
Reuters

This morning in Rome the Holy Father celebrated the chrism mass.

His homily is a beautiful meditation on the meaning of priesthood and on the meaning of Christian sacrifice, generally.

I thought it would make a nice companion piece to Lisa’s lovely post thanking our priests for their service.

Something I love in Benedict’s preaching is that he’s not afraid to be personal. There’s almost always something... READ MORE
