90 seconds to goosebumps

Priestly Goodness

What do you love about your priest?

I am blessed to know a lot of wonderfully holy priests, men who have answered the call to serve the Church and whose “yes” to Jesus draws us closer to Him.

When I think about these men, about the role each one plays in the life of our family, I am struck by how very similar—and totally different—each priest is.

What these men have in common, of course, is a love for the Church and all she has to offer... READ MORE

Building the Priesthood

we can all foster vocations

Rebecca’s discussion of the upcoming Year of the Priest reminded me of an article I read in the National Catholic Register a few years ago.

In it, Register senior writer Tim Drake looked at a recent surge in vocations, and noted several dioceses that seem to be especially thriving. Of course, one of the reasons I remember the article so well is that my own diocese, The Diocese of Savannah, was featured... READ MORE

Chrism Mass in Rome

what does it mean to be a priest?
Reuters

This morning in Rome the Holy Father celebrated the chrism mass.

His homily is a beautiful meditation on the meaning of priesthood and on the meaning of Christian sacrifice, generally.

I thought it would make a nice companion piece to Lisa’s lovely post thanking our priests for their service.

Something I love in Benedict’s preaching is that he’s not afraid to be personal. There’s almost always something... READ MORE

Thank You, Father!

Share your appreciation for the special priests in your life.

All around the world this week, Roman Catholic priests are working overtime to help their parishes and communities celebrate the liturgies of Holy Week, the Triduum, and Easter.  Undoubtedly, this week is one of the busiest for these hardworking and devoted men who do such much to support our families in faith.

A few weeks ago, reader Therese came up with the following wonderful idea:

“Could Faith... READ MORE

Fishers of Men

an inspiring short film

Here is a moving video intended to “renew priests’ sense of fulfillment in their vocation,” and to encourage those priests to invite young men to consider the priesthood. I’m posting it here in this forum for Catholic mothers not necessarily so that we encourage our sons to be open to this vocation (because I know we already do!), but perhaps to simply renew our sense of deep gratitude for the gift of our priests. (A bit long for Internet watching, at 18 minutes, but worth it.)

First Stop - Father!

A visit with my favorite Irish priest marks the first stop on our road trip

The Religious Education Congress officially begins today, so as you read this, I will be listening to a lecture by Mark Hart and dancing to Matt Maher’s lunchtime concert.  But since Martha and I arrived on the scene early yesterday, we took an impromptu visit over to Seal Beach.

This quaint seaside village is a slice of the Orange County I remember from my youth.  A walk on the pier and dinner at... READ MORE

Six Questions For The Pope

The Pope's annual Q&A with priests
AFP/Getty Images

Each summer the Holy Father meets with priests wherever he’s vacationing and takes their questions. I love these sessions because the Holy Father gives his answers off-the-cuff and we get a sense of his personality and what’s really on his heart. Here’s this year’s edition, given at Bressanone on the feast of the Transfiguration. (If you want more of the flavor of the event, you can watch a little... READ MORE
