Cleaner Heads

with a great product for parents of babies

Blaise was hospitalized with respiratory illness as a newborn. When he got stuffed up, a nurse would bring in a tube and hook it to the vacuum port on the wall, then efficiently suck all the, uh, stuff right out of his head. I watched and wished we had something similar at home. The standard bulb syringes are nearly useless.

We struggled through the colds of Blaise’s babyhood with the bulb syringe... READ MORE

Breast Milk Baby?

Creepy, or Cute and Cuddly?

I first saw the news this weekend on CNN, a small piece about “Breast Milk Baby”, a toy doll designed to simulate and promote breastfeeding. It cropped up again today in an email from my sister about an article at the Chicago Tribune where “Baby” gets a little snarkier treatment.

Here’s the basic blueprint of this $89 baby doll:

“The Breast Milk Baby simulates the breast-feeding process by including... READ MORE

Diaper Bag Quest

Have you found the perfect one?

In a couple months we’ll have newborns in our house again, and this time I am determined: I will find the perfect diaper bag.

Over the years I’ve found plenty of great baby products, but my diaper bag quest has been fruitless. IS there a perfect diaper bag out there?

We own two diaper bags, both of which I bought before Camilla was born. (Despite doing virtual and real-life searches for a great bag,... READ MORE

Video On!

The camera that helps me capture moments

I think we can all agree that technology is a mixed bag - like any neutral thing, it can be used for good or ill - but can I tell you what? Sometimes a particular item of technology makes me really glad to be raising my kids in 2011.

Currently, that item is the awesome Christmas present I got from my husband: a Flip video camera.

When I was a kid, video cameras were expensive monstrosities that parents... READ MORE

Lunchtime Innovation

A sandwich in a can: what do you think?

Have you seen this?

From an MSNBC article about the Candwich: “the reaction [the inventor] typically gets the first time people hear about his invention: ‘Ewwwwwwww.’”

I can fully relate. A sandwich in a can? The idea kind of grosses me out.

They’re not available for purchase yet, but you can see the website here. It says there will be two flavors of peanut butter and jelly, along with BBQ chicken, which alarms me. At least peanut butter and jelly are shelf-stable ingredients in their own right. Chicken, not so much.

I have to say, though, that if this product does hit the shelves, I might find myself buying one just to see what it tastes like. I can only imagine.

What do you think about the Candwich?

Bubbles for Babes

How spending a few bucks has made my summer easier

When my kids are in my hair and I want them out of it, I’ve got a great solution.

“Hey kids!” I say. “Want to go outside and blow bubbles?”

They always say yes, so I send them out on the back deck and they play with their bubbles. Often they stay out there for most of an hour.

“But wait!” I can hear you protesting. “How can you let a one-year-old and a three-year-old play with bubbles by themselves?... READ MORE

Tempted Am I

Williams-Sonoma goes over to the dark side

I tried not to look at the latest Williams-Sonoma catalog.

But I sensed a disturbance in the force and gave in.

I know this ought to be resisted: else where will the product tie-ins end?

And yet…I have little wookies boys who would be absolutely delighted if these showed up at a birthday party.

I hate it when the Dark Side is cute.

Beauty on Budget

What are your favorite products?

One of my most cherished memories from my adolescence is the seasonal trip to the Clinique counter that my mother and I would make together.

I don’t remember why Clinique became our cosmetic company of choice, though I continue to be happy with their products to this day. I imagine my Mom had identified it as her favorite at some point and so naturally I adopted it as my own, as well.

My mother always... READ MORE

At Home Spa

Beauty from within your pantry

Lately I have been having this urge to do something fabulous for my skin, but I had no idea what. I’ve never gone to a fancy salon for one of those oxygen-infused facials, but was feeling just road-weary enough that I was considering it (having no idea what these cost or other minor details).

Yesterday, to my great delight, our local newspaper carried a wire story about at-home beauty treatments.... READ MORE

Built for Two?

Review this product (please)

At the big box store yesterday, I stumbled across a bike carrier that attaches to the bike in front of the rider. Until that moment, I had been eyeing one of the carriers that attaches to the back of the bike.

I’m torn about this carrier, the one that attaches to the front. I love the idea of it, and everything looks great in the pictures, but will the baby impede my view? Could I maneuver my bike with little man right there?

Has anyone out there purchased this item? What are your thoughts? Oh, and for years we’ve used a bike trailer, but now that there’s only one non-biker I thought we could offer him a better view.
