use those leftovers!

It’s the Monday after Thanksgiving. Do you know where your turkey carcass is?

I’m sure most of our lovely readers, superb homemakers that you are, have already dealt with yours. But in case you’re a procrastinator like me, may I remind you that making stock is both easy and cost-effective? And will make for some lovely soup at some later date? Read about making stock here.

(Or, if you’re too busy... READ MORE

Pumpkin Joy

It's almost fall, y'all

This Friday marks the first day of Autumn. Hooray!

The bad news is lots of rain is having an effect on pumpkin production.

The good news is you can get pumpkins in a variety of forms. So let’s focus on the good!

What are a few of your favorite pumpkin things?

Around here, I love:

1. Pumpkin spice candles

2. Starbucks pumpkin spice latte (I usually get one, because it starts to taste like pumpkin bread... READ MORE

Life and Death of Pumpkin

a spooky tale for Halloween

Warm Up With Pumpkin Soup

(and three other delicious pumpkin recipes!)

Over the weekend, I was inspired by the simple recipe for Pumpkin Soup Kristen Laurence shared.

My one word review? Yum. It was perfect with grilled cheese sandwiches and it tastes exactly like a fall soup should. I am patting myself on the back for having discovered such a delicious way to get some calcium, vitamin A, and beta carotene into my kids.

I am a big fan of pumpkin flavors in the fall,... READ MORE

Simple Pleasures

What are yours?

Today I bought a new pack of sponges, some that tout a “fresh scent” and do indeed smell chipper.

I chuckled to myself a bit as I took one sponge out of the package and placed it with great delight near the sink. “Wow,” I thought, “you are easily pleased!”

Of course this isn’t always the case, but isn’t it amazing the little things that can add a boost to our day? I’m thinking about new kitchen sponges... READ MORE

Fall is in the Air

What do you love?

Is it fall where you live? It isn’t here, not quite. The evenings are getting a bit of chill, but the days are still a little on the scorchy side (scorchy with a nice breeze, though).

So, indulge me. What is your favorite part of fall? Let’s talk about it to help get us all excited about this most wonderful time of the year.

As for me, I’m excited about: making my favorite soups (vegetable and cheese!... READ MORE

Ending Autumn Tastily

with homemade pumpkin-apple butter

While Rachel’s been sadly taking down her autumn decorations, I’ve been dealing with the edible remains of the fall season. This weekend I made stock out of our turkey carcass, and being kitchen-frugal like that always inspires me to do more.

Back in October when we carved big pumpkins, I bought two pie pumpkins for Camilla and her cousin to decorate with washable markers. I’d intended to use them... READ MORE

Recipes for Fall Feasts

sharing the wealth

In my recent post about our upcoming Oktoberfest, Tiffany asks:

“Would you be willing to share what is on your menu for your Oktoberfest? It sounds like it would be a fun way to celebrate fall!”

It sure is and I sure will. Our Oktoberfest is a traditional gathering of friends and family. We carve pumpkins, play horseshoes, drink beer, and give the kids lots of cotton candy and other treats.

Dan’s... READ MORE

A Panic-Inducing Sign

terror at the grocery store

Our family’s annual Oktoberfest is this coming Saturday. 38 kids and 17 grown ups coming to my house for fall feasting means I’ve been preparing to bake pumpkin bread and pumpkin pie. And plenty of it.

Imagine my panic, then, when at the store this weekend I saw this sign.

No canned pumpkin. Darn all that rain!

I did the rest of my shopping with my heart in my throat, all the while envisioning a potentially... READ MORE
