Have A Plan for the All Souls Octave
Posted by Rebecca Teti in Faith on Friday, October 28, 2011
Just a quick reminder—since Saturday is the typical parish Confession day—that not only Halloween & All Saints Day are upon us, but also All Souls’ Day, and an entire octave of days to release souls from Purgatory.
You’ll find a quick reminder of the hows, whys and wherefores at the link.
I was grateful for the advanced notice!
P.S. Fr. Z. indicates there that we’re to pray for the Holy Father’s “monthly intentions.” This is the first time I’ve run into that qualifier—I’ve always understood “Holy Father’s intentions,” generally—whatever they might be. From the point of view of intent and fulfillment of the indulgence, I’m certain it’s fine, since the latter includes the former. Just curious if that’s a new one on anyone else.

The Holy Father preached yesterday’s audience on the “third Catherine”—Catherine of Genoa.
(She joins St. Catherine of Siena and St. Catherine of Bologna.)
She’s best known for her teaching on Purgatory, but what fascinates me about her is that she was a married woman with an active apostolate who nonetheless attained the very heights of mystical union with God.
Raised in a pious home, she had a troubled... READ MORE

On the last day of a theology class I took in college, the professor walked into the room, looked at us seriously, and picked up a piece of chalk. He said, “If you remember only one thing from this course, I want it to be this.”
And then he wrote across the board in big capital letters: “PRAY FOR THE SOULS OF THE DEAD.”
The class, incidentally, was Theology of John Paul II, so this point wasn’t even... READ MORE

Today is the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed (All Souls Day). And it is also the beginning of a particularly fruitful time of year to gain a plenary indulgence for souls in purgatory.
“An indulgence, applicable only to the Souls in Purgatory, is granted to the faithful, who devoutly visit a cemetery and pray, even if only mentally, for the departed. The indulgence is plenary each day from... READ MORE

Q: Please explain Plenary Indulgences. If one confession fulfills the requirement of plenary indulgences 8 days before and 8 days after, it seems to me that if someone went to Communion everyday, prayed for the intentions of the Holy Father everyday and prayed the rosary before the Blessed Sacrament everyday, that she could release 17 souls from purgatory in 17 days. Is that right?
A: Last time we explored, briefly, the reality of purgatory,... READ MORE

Remember Them in Prayer

On the last day of one of my college theology courses, the professor surveyed the class seriously. He was an energetic man who usually told plenty of jokes, but on that day his voice was low and firm.
“If you only take away one thing from this class,” he said, “I want it to be this.”
He took a piece of chalk and wrote in bold capital letters on the board: PRAY FOR THE SOULS OF THE DEAD.
He impressed... READ MORE
