Turn Off the Noise

Seeking God in the Quiet

I am studying for my post master’s certificate at Holy Apostles College. One of the classes that I took this semester was Catechetics (with a dynamite teacher, Sr. Mary Anne Linder, FSE). This class was helpful and inspiring for all of us who are teaching CCD in the local parishes.

For our final project we had to read C.S. Lewis’s Screwtape Letters and rewrite one of the letters in a creative way.... READ MORE

Cry Room Conundrum

Are they all that bad?

For the first time in a long while, I am a frequent visitor of the dreaded Cry Room. It’s not my favorite place to hang out, but it’s our best option right now.

We’ve been in a very nice season for a long while. After what felt like eternity with our oldest four we finally had everyone trained with good behavior and had even managed to move to the very front of our church. When Henry came along, he... READ MORE

Inner Peace

Where do you find it?

Right now, it’s crazy loud in my house. I turned on an after-dinner movie, hoping to settle the scene. It’s not working.

In the front room, two of the boys just finished an obstacle course that involved playing leap frog with my leather ottoman’s. There are dress-up’s strewn throughout the kitchen, someone is asking for a snack even though dinner ended ten minutes prior.

Cue toddler crying, wanting... READ MORE

Questing for Quiet

Have you had "quiet time" lately?

My sister Erin sent me this adorable photo of my nephew Evan, a first grader and I think one of the most beautiful children on the face of this earth - not that I’m biased or anything!  I was struck by the photo, by the expression on Evan’s face but mostly by the bright red “Quiet” sign.  Maybe it’s because I’m in the midst of needing a little quiet in my own life…

When our kids outgrow naps, we often... READ MORE

Oh the Glamour!

Behind the podcast

Sometime tomorrow we will be posting this week’s Faith & Family Live! podcast, a conversation between Danielle, Arwen and me.

This week we discussed vacation and exercise (not at the same time) and because I am in the throes of packing for vacation, and thus trying to run a million errands, I did some juggling to “get to” the podcast.

I decided to make the call en route to the grocery store, thus... READ MORE

Does the Internet Affect Your Prayer Life?

Fr. James Martin Makes a Point

First of all, can I just say how happy I am to see Fr. James Martin writing for the Huffington Post? His words are always a breath of fresh air to this mom who finds most other entries there discouraging, if not disturbing, to Catholic thinkers.

His latest, Does E-Mail Make It Harder to Pray? How the Digital Age Is Changing Spiritual Life, is no exception.

There’s been a lot of online talk about the... READ MORE

My Clothesline Brings Me Closer to God

Confessions of a laundry geek

I am not much enamored with laundry. I would gratefully accept the help of a laundry fairy if there really were such a thing. (There isn’t, right? Don’t hold out on me here, moms.)

In a family of ten, though, laundry is an everyday, ongoing process of washing drying, folding, and putting away.

One of the best things I ever did for myself was to stop trying to get the laundry “done.” It never will... READ MORE

Success!

Celebrating a personal victory

So I know that Danielle’s weekly focus on getting it right isn’t until tomorrow, but I want to report a little triumph in my own life—namely that I have a few extra minutes to sit here before the dinner hour because (drumroll please)—dinner is all ready to go!

This past weekend, I made a decision to sit down and make a two-week menu. This is a big deal for me. Then I looked at my week and realized that because of the level of activity, I would be best served by cooking several dinners ahead of time. So I did. I made the food a few days ago, when things were nice and quiet. And now, on a day when I am normally running ragged to get it all done, here I sit. Dinner is in the oven and it will be delicious.

Can’t wait to hear about your successes tomorrow!

Love!

How shall we celebrate?

I’m just curious—how do you celebrate Valentine’s Day? Do you have plans to go out, or will you mark the day over a candlelit supper at home?

Or will you even celebrate at all?

Valentine’s Day is always special for us because it’s the day Paul and I got engaged. I was initially a tad embarrassed about the whole thing; getting engaged on Valentine’s Day seemed a bit overly-romantic. Now, however, I love it that we clearly mark and celebrate the day of our engagement.

The first few years, before we had children, we would go to the same restaurant where Paul proposed. In recent history, now that our kid count is at five, I relish a quiet evening at home, sharing some wine and delicious take-out once the boys are in bed.

What about you? How will you mark this day of amore?

Finding Peace

How do you inspire peace in your home?

In recent days, I’ve been reading Mitten Strings for God: Reflections for Mothers in a Hurry by Katrina Kenison, a seriously beautiful and inspiring book for mothers of all kinds.

So much of what Kenison, a mother of two boys, shares resonates with me. She has a true mother’s heart and she writes of the kinds of joys, struggles, and longings that are in every mother’s heart.

The chapter titles alone... READ MORE
