What’s for Dinner?

share your plans

Even those of us who enjoy cooking can fall into a culinary rut now and then.

Rachel’s recent post about the success of her menu planning party started me thinking about sharing dinner ideas.

I’ve recently found frugal dinner inspiration at 5 Dollar Dinners, a blog devoted to sharing inexpensive recipes. There are some creative dinner ideas there I never would have thought of trying on my own.

I used to belong to a mom’s message board where someone would regularly ask, “What’s for dinner?” and all the members would chime in with their dinner plans. Seeing what others planned was always helpful and inspiring.

So I thought we could try that here. You don’t have to type out your recipes, just share your menu—what’s for dinner tonight?

Are You a Sweet Swiper?

Test your Treat IQ!

I’ve been known in my home for making strategic raids upon my kids’ treat stashes around this time of the year - with the onset of holiday parties, “fun size” Milky Way bars are not safe in my home unless they are well hidden from Mom!

How do you handle all of the goodies that get brought home from various social events at this time of the year?  It seems that between mid October and January, our... READ MORE

A Grand Adventure

or Dealing with Drudgery

Tonight I am having a bunch of neighbor lady friends over for some wild and crazy fun—a Menu Planning Party!

Can you think of anything you’d like to do more? I didn’t think so.

I know, maybe it sounds lame, but the truth is this: it’s going to be fun. Because I’m going to make it fun.

I realized recently that for me, planning a menu feels a lot like work. So I’m going to work to make it fun. About... READ MORE

Slow Cooking with Style

It's time to break out the crock pot!

Here in Fresno, California, the weather forecast for the next several days calls for temperatures in the high 80’s and low 90’s, which doesn’t exactly feel like “sweater weather”.

But despite the heat, I’m trying to find crock pot recipes that will please my family and ease my “to do” list, all in one fell swoop.  With all of the evening rehearsals, practices, meetings and more, it can become a true... READ MORE

Slow Change

Sometimes it's hard to move on

Yesterday I did something wild and crazy, something raw and daring and in-your-face cutting edge.

For the first time in seven years, I tried a new chocolate chip cookie recipe.

Oh the pride I took yesterday morning as I opened a cookbook and looked up cookies and then turned to that page and decided that yes, today would be the day I would try this new recipe. Today is the day for personal evolution,... READ MORE

Perfect Pie Crust

You can do this!

In this week’s Coffee Talk, Carolyn asks a question on a topic near to my heart: Pie Crust.

Is making a good pie crust an innate talent or will I, someday, learn to make one that doesn’t fall apart? The Pillsbury refrigerated ones are just so easy, but like learning to fold a fitted sheet, I’d someday like to make a perfect crust!

Other commenters contributed their recipes and now I can’t help but... READ MORE

Food: It’s What’s For Breakfast

In search of (more) menu help

Growing up, my mother provided hot breakfast for our family every morning but Saturday. One of my favorite meals was cheese grits, which I could easily eat every day of the week. I would very much love to serve cheese grits around here at least that often.

Unfortunately, my boys have inherited their father’s love of grits, which on a scale of one to ten is about a negative two (while this would not... READ MORE

Bumper Crop

How do you prolong the tastes of summer?

Can someone tell me how it got to be mid-August so fast? So many big projects intended…and only one of them accomplished—which I guess means the kids & I have had a good summer, right? (Say “Right.”)  One project I’m resolved to accomplish between now and September is reining in a mutant crop of basil which is taking over my garden (even intimidating the mint, which is not a shy plant, as you gardeners...
