NFP 4 U?

dig deeper at forum for Catholic women

Our Wednesday NFP Coffee Talk here at F&F is pretty great. And useful!

But what if you need something more? A space where you can regularly discuss the nitty-gritty of all the aspects of NFP use, while receiving help and encouragement from other Catholic women?

Well, here’s an answer for you.

The site Living the Sacrament: A Catholic NFP Community is beautifully designed and thoughtfully administered.... READ MORE

Phone (at) Home

new cell phone recommendations

A new recommendation by the NTSB calls for a ban on cell phones while driving.

Washington (CNN)—Federal accident investigators Tuesday called for a nationwide ban on the use of cell phones and text messaging devices while driving.

The recommendation is the most far-reaching yet by the National Transportation Safety Board, which in the past 10 years has increasingly sought to limit the use of portable... READ MORE

Panda To Me

which kid movies are worth seeing?

Can you stand another movie post this week?

This time I’m soliciting your advice.

Is there a kid movie this summer that’s worth forking over the outrageous fortunes it now takes to see a flick in a theater?

I’m asking specifically about Cars 2 and whichever Kung-Fu Panda this is, but if there’s something else meritorious, please steer me towards it.

Every parent has his own take on what is and... READ MORE

Stock My Bookshelf

recommend some Lenten reading

I stock a shelf of spiritual reading at the back of my parish. It makes a negligible amount of money for St. Jerome’s but hopefully makes edifying reading easily accessible.

I’m getting ready to stock the shelf for Lent. I have my stand-bys and favorites, but wonder what you’d recommend?

Keep in mind there’s a limited budget so the works should be:

  • inexpensive

  • of general interest

  • appropriate for Lent

  • and of course faithfully Catholic

Starting Dental Care

When do kids need it?

Last week my daughter asked me how long it was until our upcoming dental appointment.

“Nine days,” I told her, and her face fell.

“I can’t wait that long!”

Did I laugh inwardly at the absurdity of this? Yes, a little. But was I happy that my child is actually excited about a trip to the dentist? Absolutely.

We had our appointment today, and it went very well. Camilla was extremely cooperative, and... READ MORE

No Age Limit

Do you like young adult fiction?

I normally want to post about food on a regular basis, but during pregnancy my recipe consumption goes way down. My book consumption, on the other hand, increases significantly. There’s something about dealing with constant nausea that makes me want to disappear into a novel.

The last time I was at the library, I grabbed the first of Regina Doman’s fairy tale novels, Snow White & Rose Red. I’d heard... READ MORE

One for Mystery Readers

A favorite author: Charlotte MacLeod

A couple years ago, I mentioned my favorite mystery novelist, Dorothy L. Sayers.

Any mystery lovers out there want to talk mysteries again?

Along with Sayers, G.K. Chesterton, author of the famous Father Brown stories, is a top-notch mystery writer. P.D. James is also excellent. And I’m a fan of the culinary mysteries of Diane Mott Davidson - they’re not the same caliber as those other authors, but... READ MORE

What Are Your Favorite Romantic Comedies?

I'm gathering date night suggestions

Dan and I recently enjoyed watching Letters to Juliet.

It was certainly not high art, but it was a cute little story (I think completely inoffensive, but don’t quote me on that—I might have forgotten something!) and made for a fun evening together.

We enjoy watching lots of different kinds of movies, but when it’s my turn to choose what we watch, I pretty much always pick a romantic comedy.

But picking... READ MORE

Singing to Sleep

What lullabies do you love?

When I was first married and thought of my future children, one of the things I most looked forward to was singing them lullabies.

We didn’t have Michael Card’s album Sleep Sound in Jesus until I was in high school, so I don’t have memories of hearing the songs on it when I was a small child. But once we got the album, even though I was far too old for my mother to sing me to sleep any more, I promptly... READ MORE

Book Time with Kids

Looking for chapter books to read aloud

Last year I blogged about my love for Maud Hart Lovelace’s Betsy-Tacy books.

This year I’m thrilled to report that Betsy and Tacy have acquired another fan: my three-year-old daughter.

Until recently, I couldn’t read chapter books aloud to Camilla. She’d interrupt me after every paragraph and squirm onto my lap, demanding to see the pictures. I tried Charlotte’s Web a few months ago and gave up quickly,... READ MORE
