Peace for Weary Travelers

Easy ways to say "Be my guest" with love ...

Expecting house guests this weekend for Christmas? Or later this season?

Most likely, they’ve come a long way to spend some time with your family, and most likely they’re pretty fried by the time they’ve braved traffic, airports, or weather. How can you make their arrival more peaceful? A few last-minute reminders and simple ideas …

1. Greet them at the door with as many luggage carriers as your house... READ MORE

Doing or Being?

What de-stresses you on vacation?

We’ve been on vacation since last week, and we are having such a relaxing time.

The first time I went on vacation with a family other than my own, I was fifteen. It shocked me to discover that my friend’s family did a big activity on every single day of their trip. For us, vacationing meant spending entire afternoons reading or playing games or running around outside. We’d do one or two sightseeing... READ MORE

Yoga and Christianity

Do they mix?

Southern Baptist Seminary President Albert Mohler is making waves with his recent comments that Christians should not practice yoga. In a piece he wrote for his website, Mohler said the practice of yoga is at odds with Christianity.

“Christians are not called to empty the mind or to see the human body as a means of connecting to and coming to know the divine,” he wrote.

I’ll admit I have not done... READ MORE

Music to Birth By

What do you listen to while in labor?

Strangely enough, though I typically have some sort of music playing morning, noon and night, I have never listened to music during any of my previous four labors.

I just stumbled across this article, though, and I think I just might like to try incorporating music into my upcoming birth experience. The article states that “if you choose the right music, you can increase your body’s production of... READ MORE

Girls' Night Out

Do you do it?

Whenever I hear someone talking about “girls’ night out” I get a wistful pang.

For a social person like me, the idea of party time sans children is very appealing. I’m not talking wild partying here. A tea party would be plenty wild enough for me, as long as I had something to sip and good conversation with my friends and I didn’t have to wipe a nose or change a diaper the whole time. Unfortunately,... READ MORE

Deep Breath

finding a minute for yourself

Are you feeling harried yet? A bit frazzled? I’m trying not to, but then I’ll think of everything on my to-do list—a zillion little details that will not make-or-break our celebration but are still a priority—I think of all that and feel a little overwhelmed.

So I’m trying to keep the pace realistic. And I’m trying to work in some “me” time in the midst of all this. I’m not the lady pictured here,... READ MORE

Time Alone Is Precious

Other things are even more so

Being a mother of little ones is strange.  I often have no idea what day it is, but I can tell you almost to the minute how long it’s been since the last nap or the most recent potty break, and exactly how many hours there are between now and bedtime.

I rarely consult my calendar, but I live my life by the clock.

This morning, with my sister babysitting, I got to leave the house for some precious... READ MORE

Re-reading is Great

Books can be like old friends

I have been visiting old friends this past week, and enjoying it immensely.  More specifically, I am re-reading L.M. Montgomery’s Anne books.  Nearly everyone has heard of Anne of Green Gables but I love not just the first book but the whole series, and have read all of the books more times than I can count.

I know there are people who don’t re-read books.  I had a friend in college who thought me... READ MORE
