New Missal Mania

How did it go at your parish?

After months of talking about it, preparing for it, and educating our families about it, we finally welcomed the Roman Missal Third Edition this past weekend at my local parish. My husband, whose involved in liturgical music at our parish, came home from morning mass with a report that all had gone well and that everyone seemed ready and well prepared.

When we returned for the evening mass at our... READ MORE

Verifying Mass Attendance

Is it necessary? How does your parish do it?

[Please note that there are now over 50 comments, which is where our pagination system kicks in. To see comments over 50, please go to the second page.]

Yesterday, I had an interesting conversation with one of our readers. This mom had just come from a recent First Communion preparation meeting with her First Grader, a Catholic school student who will be receiving his sacraments next Spring.

Whole Family Catechesis

Does your parish form the whole family?

Tonight I had the pleasure of speaking at a parish which employs “Whole Family Catechesis” as a part of their religious education program. The evening started with a family dinner, and then the kids went off to class, the Dad’s had a men’s group and the moms joined me for a discussion based upon The Handbook for Catholic Moms

I was so inspired that this parish is really working to form the whole... READ MORE

Compulsory Confirmation?

Would you force a teen to prepare for Confirmation?

Today’s article on teenage mass issues by Tom and Caroline McDonald reminded me of a recent email query from a distraught mom that landed in my inbox:

Any suggestions for help with my daughter who came home from the first night of confirmation class and tearfully announced that she can’t make this commitment because she’s not sure she believes in God…? It’s going to be a long year.

Obviously, these... READ MORE

Are You a Catechist?

Do you teach at your parish?

Today, I am so excited that I’ll be spending the day with a thousand catechists and ministry folks at the Diocese of Sacramento’s Catechist Ministry Day.  When I grow up, one of the things I’d love to be is a catechist - their commitment to educating the children of our parishes in the faith is amazing.  Through my work with CatholicMom.com, I often have a front row seat to the long hours they put... Gospel Message for Children

A video to help your little ones prepare for Sunday

I’ve been tinkering this week and created the following little video to help you and your children prepare a bit before Sunday’s Mass.  I’m hoping to begin offering these regularly if families and religious education teachers find them of use.  Since this is our first attempt, there is still much to be learned and improved upon, but this Sunday’s gospel message is truly a beauty.  Enjoy!

Fulfilling Our Baptismal Calling

Preparing for an upcoming conference...

In anticipation of an upcoming talk I’m giving at a Religious Education conference, I thought I’d approach my favorite panel of Catholic parenting experts for your advice and expertise.  The topic at hand is how we—as Catholic family members—live out our Baptismal calling.  I will be looking specifically at the promises we parents make (or adults, when baptized in later years) at the time of our children’s... What Bible Version Do You Use?

A new revision of the NIV is in the works...

An article at Catholic News Agency today announced that biblical scholars are at work on a new version of the New International Version (NIV) of the Bible, to be released in 2010.  You may know the NIV as one of the most popular Bible translations among Protestants.

The goal of this revision seems to be making the NIV more user friendly:

“Keith Danby, Global President and CEO of Biblica, said the... READ MORE
