Spa Treats on the Cheap

Homemade beauty regimens make you feel pretty for less

I’m not an extravagant mom. I’ve never been to one of those fancy spas where they scrub your body with papaya and slather your face with cocoa cream.

But I have always been a sucker for homemade spa treatments you can replicate at home. I can remember kneeling beside the tub in my parents’ house as a teenager, rinsing my hair with strong tea ... to make it shine, of course.

So imagine my delight when... READ MORE

Beach Livin’

checking in from my remote location

We are on vacation this week in the beautiful Outer Banks of North Carolina. Internet has been spotty, and when I clicked on this morning and was connected, I decided to say a quick hello.

Hello!

Things are going well and this “retreat” has been good for body, mind and soul.

I will tell you more about it later—about how we left Henry at home in the very capable hands of his loving aunt and how I wrestled with that decision and how I’m so glad a few good friends and one very wise woman (my mother) encouraged me to go for it. And how even just three days in, this has given me the biggest reboot in a very long time.

So more on that later, but for now—to the shore!

Shower Of Roses

One of the coolest Roman Catholic (Roman in the geographical sense) traditions is the shower of roses from the oculus of the Pantheon at Pentecost. The bright petals are meant to recall the tongues of fire. I’ve only seen it in stills, but here it is in video.

I’m away on Ignatian Spiritual Exercises this week (this and other posts from me have been pre-loaded to run in my absence), but I thought this post on the Holy Spirit would be a good opportunity to tell you I will pray for all our readers and their intentions in front of the blessed sacrament this week.

Pray for me to be open to the Holy Spirit and for my long-suffering and generous family to survive intact, okay?

The View from My Office Today

Taking a few days for a "mom retreat" is a wonderful thing!

Let me apologize in advance for the fact that this post may spark a bit of envy in some of you who are still experiencing frigid temps or who haven’t had a moment to yourself in the past thirteen years.

I contemplated keeping my good fortune this week a secret, but couldn’t help but share with you the wonders of a “mom retreat”!  Yesterday, after taking Adam to the airport for his D.C. trip, my... READ MORE

Unpacking the Weekend

Still trying to transition back to the "real world"

Have you ever had the experience after returning from a retreat or other wonderful spiritual experience when you feel completely overwhelmed by your return to the “real world”?

That hit me a bit yesterday.  We drove home from Southern California Sunday afternoon, arriving in Fresno around 8:00 pm.  I was exhausted from the weekend, both emotionally and physically.  Part of me wanted to sit with Greg... READ MORE

Retreat Roadtrip

Would love your prayers!

Hey girlfriends!  I’m so excited to share that as you read this, I’ll be in my mom-mobile with a good girlfriend, headed to Anaheim for a four day weekend.

The trip is part retreat, part “business”, and part pleasure!  Along with many of the teachers from my son’s Catholic school, we will be attending the Religious Education Congress.  I’m so excited for the opportunity to hear some of my favorite... READ MORE

Getting Away

Taking time for spiritual rejuvenation

This weekend I’m going to my parish’s annual women’s retreat.

I’m a little apprehensive because it’s my first night away from Camilla, ever.  I’m excited, though, because it’ll be my first lengthy stretch of alone time since Camilla was born.  I’m also excited because our parish’s retreat was wonderful the last time I went, and I’m expecting the weekend to be very spiritually rewarding.

I’ve written before... READ MORE

Pausing to Pray

Pausing for prayer can be a challenge for mothers

Today, I did something very luxurious - I went on a retreat!  Yes, the day before my son heads off for his Junior year in high school, with errands on my list, a mound of laundry to be done, and work piling up, I spent seven hours on retreat!

Since I work part time for my parish, the retreat was not my idea but rather part of my work responsibilities and a mandated event.  I’ll admit that when I saw... READ MORE
