Giving Thanks for Blessed John Paul II

What would you thank him for?

Continuing on with sharing a few of the events of my journey to Rome with you, I next want to unfold for you the story of my attendance at Monday’s Mass of Thanksgiving for the newly beatified Blessed John Paul II.

My day started off like a dream, when my good friend and fellow Catholic blogger Brandon Vogt shared the ticket he wouldn’t be using for the Mass due to his alternative plans. Before I... READ MORE

What to Pack?

What would you take to Rome?

OK friends, Rebecca shared the good news recently that I will be headed to the Vatican this weekend. This trip was a very big surprise and has been planned quite quickly with the help of many good friends. I am so excited that I will be able to share it with all of you via blog posts coming during the time I am in Italy.

But first, I have to get there. The trip is going to involve planes, trains and... READ MORE

All Dressed Up…

http://theratzingerforum.yuku.com/topic/510/Papal-clothing-and-liturgical-practices?page=37

The church in Rome has all these charming little customs—like dropping rose petals through the oculum of the former Pantheon on Pentecost.

Today’s feast of the Chair of St. Peter is the occasion for one of them: the dressing of the statue of the apostle in St. Peter’s basilica in vestments (scroll down for pix).

They do it again on the feast of Ss. Peter & Paul.

Today’s feast is a celebration of... READ MORE

The Pope At Home

In a special edition of Catholic TV’s House & Home show, we’re treated to a behind-the-scenes look at the papal apartments.

Mary's Message From The Spanish Steps

AP Photo/Pier Paolo Cito

Each December 8, the people of Rome gather at the Spanish Steps to honor the Immaculate Conception.

The pope’s lovely remarks for the occasion yesterday are here.

After reminding the crowd that Mary’s message is embodied in her life itself—her sanctity is a message to each of us that God thought of us before we were conceived and loves us profoundly—he reflects:

...when I come here, on this feast,... READ MORE

Feeling Cramped?

Here's some perspective

Enjoy this picture of the “World’s smallest apartment,” up for sale in Rome.

The flat consists of a ground floor bathroom with a shower, sink and lavatory and a ladder leading to a sleeping platform just big enough for a single bed. There is a single window, but to open it you have to climb over the bed.

It can be yours, for about $68,000.

Our Advent Lady

The Pope visited Rome’s famed Spanish Steps on Tuesday.

He went to pay homage to the Immaculate Conception on her feast day. Her image hangs over the piazza there, almost keeping watch over the city.

The Pope’s remarks there are lovely—and since we celebrate another Marian feast tomorrow (Guadalupe), I thought they’d still be timely.

“What does Mary tell the city? Of what does her presence remind... READ MORE

Rosary With The Pope

Students from eight countries in Africa joined students in Rome by satellite for a rosary with the Pope last week.

The occasion was prayer for the Synod of Bishops for Africa, now underway. Here’s a short news clip about the event.

While the link lasts, you can watch video of this international rosary and pray along by following this link to the Vatican site, then pressing the “Rosary with university students” button.

Snow In The Cathedral

Mary is among us like Christmas snows in Roman summer.

In Rome they celebrate August 5th as the feast of Our Lady of Snows, observing the feast by removing ceiling panels from Sta. Maria Maggiore Basilica and dropping rose and jasmine petals down. I snatched this photo from the Orbus Catholicus website, where there are additional shots. I love this tradition and even more the story behind it.

In 358, Our Lady appeared in a dream to Giovanni, a man who... READ MORE
