Stacking Tasks
Posted by Arwen Mosher in Homemaking on Tuesday, August 02, 2011
With two little ones who are not yet three months old, it’s pretty much all baby, all the time around here. I keep trying to think of other things to blog about but I keep coming back to this: TWO babies. My mind is infant-fuzzy right now.
One of the things I find really hard about the early months is the task of working out a routine. I don’t use a schedule - I hate feeling like the clock is bossing... READ MORE
Getting It Clean?
Posted by Arwen Mosher in Family on Thursday, February 24, 2011
Since my husband and I became parents, our evening routine has gone like this: put the kid(s) to bed, tackle tidying the house, then finally - when things are back in order - relax until it’s time for bed.
There have been a handful of nights when we’ve skipped the tidying, but we’ve always regretted it. It helps immensely to start the next day with a living room that is cleared of toys, with a kitchen... READ MORE
Kiss Me To Sleep, Mama

Propelling my daughter through her bedtime routine, I often feel like I’m trying to drag her through wet cement.
Some evenings I think I’d prefer the wet cement prospect.
It’s partly my own fault for letting her get away with dawdling. We’re working on that. Sometimes, though, three-year-olds are just slow. During her nightly snack, I sit with her while she eats… and eats… and eats… and I remember... READ MORE
Early to Bed, Early to Rise? Maybe Not
Posted by Danielle Bean in Family on Tuesday, June 09, 2009
I thought yesterday’s Coffee Talk discussion about family bedtimes and Arwen’s ongoing discussion of sleepless babies made for some very interesting reading.
Bedtimes are something I’ve thought about a lot in recent years.
You see, we used to be a 7:30 pm bedtime kind of family. I loved that!
But then those grade school kids we were so fond of pushing around had the nerve to grow up into middle-sized... READ MORE
A Better Start
Posted by Arwen Mosher in Family on Tuesday, April 21, 2009
Mornings used to be my least favorite part of the day.
I’m not a morning person, and although I loved being awakened by my little girl’s sweet voice each day, the struggle to meet all her first-thing needs and find time for my own basic hygiene turned me into a harried mess by 8:06 am.
The obvious answer was to get up earlier than Camilla so that I’d have time for my own tasks before she awakened. ... READ MORE
Wake Up, Dad!
Posted by Matthew Archbold in Family on Monday, March 16, 2009
Here’s how I wake up every morning. My wife lays the one year old on the bed next to me. The baby gently places her hands on my chest, leans in towards my closed eyes and blares, “Wake up Dad!!!!!!!!!!!!”
Now to be honest it sounds more like “EggapDaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!” But she gets the point across with window rattling volume.
My wife thinks it’s very funny. I consider it alternately cute and sadistic... READ MORE
Shower Power
Posted by Danielle Bean in Family on Tuesday, January 20, 2009
I was both amused and amazed at the number of moms who claimed “taking a shower” as one of their notable daily accomplishments in our recent discussion about focusing on small successes.
Personal cleanliness, a small amount of time spent alone, and the feeling of well-being that comes from being clean and refreshed seem like pretty basic human needs for mothers. But as every mother knows, there are... READ MORE
Finding Peace

In recent days, I’ve been reading Mitten Strings for God: Reflections for Mothers in a Hurry by Katrina Kenison, a seriously beautiful and inspiring book for mothers of all kinds.
So much of what Kenison, a mother of two boys, shares resonates with me. She has a true mother’s heart and she writes of the kinds of joys, struggles, and longings that are in every mother’s heart.
The chapter titles alone... READ MORE
Lessons from the Amish
Posted by Danielle Bean in Health on Friday, September 12, 2008
Have you ever eaten an Amish meal? Have you ever wondered why people who regularly indulge in butter, cream, sugar, and carbs of all kinds are not obese?
Turns out it’s because they work so darn hard.
Four years ago we discovered that the Amish maintained super-low obesity levels despite eating a diet high in fat, calories and refined sugar. They key was their level of physical activity — men averaged... READ MORE
Are We Having Fun Yet?
Posted by Danielle Bean in Family on Monday, August 04, 2008
It’s August and the end of summer is on the horizon. Here, we won’t go “back to school” until the second week of September, but I know many of you start earlier than that.
There’s no time like the present for squeezing a bit more fun from summertime with your family. What have you planned to do this summer but haven’t gotten around to yet? A day trip to the water park? Berry picking? A trip to the... READ MORE
