Verifying Mass Attendance

Is it necessary? How does your parish do it?

[Please note that there are now over 50 comments, which is where our pagination system kicks in. To see comments over 50, please go to the second page.]

Yesterday, I had an interesting conversation with one of our readers. This mom had just come from a recent First Communion preparation meeting with her First Grader, a Catholic school student who will be receiving his sacraments next Spring.

One of... READ MORE

Divorced, Not Separated…From The Church

stlouiscatholic.blogspot.com

I know I’ve posted on this before, but so many divorced Catholics think they’re unwelcome at Church, I like to remind people periodically that it’s not so!

Particularly as we get close to Holy Week and souls may be inspired to “come home for Easter,” I call your attention to two sites that may be helpful and informative.

Divorcedcatholic.org has an excellent set of FAQs about divorced persons, the... READ MORE

Sacramental Gifts that Keep On Giving

What is your gift of choice?

I loved this recent article at the Catholic News Service Blog that reported on a young Confirmand’s decision to donate the cash gifts she received for her Confirmation to a worthy cause.

Brianna’s decision to donate to the Alzheimer’s Association on behalf of her beloved Grandmother brought a smile to my face - how wonderful that in seeking spiritual formation, she also learned the value of service... READ MORE

Confirmation: How Do You Celebrate?

what are your Confirmation traditions?

Our eldest son will be confirmed in two weeks.

Naturally we’re excited, but I’m curious how others celebrate.

My husband was Confirmed young and doesn’t recall whether he had a party, and I was Confirmed as an adult the same day as my Baptism & First Communion—so between us there is no sense of family tradition on the subject.

We have a meaningful gift in mind, and there will of course be a little party—but I’d love to hear what you do in your homes to mark the under-appreciated, least-understood sacrament?

Archbishop Dolan on Lent and confession

This surely won’t be the last post you’ll see this Lenten season about going to confession. Heck, it’s probably not even the first.

And I’m not going to discuss it this time around. I’ll let New York’s Archbishop Timothy Dolan do that through his own simple post on “renewal of heart” and “the power of the Truth.” In it, he shares a reflection on his personal need for confession and his practice of... READ MORE

First Communion Photo Etiquette

What's appropriate?

I received a very thoughtful email today from a photographer who was hired to shoot photos before, during and after an upcoming First Communion mass.  She posed the following question:

I am familiar with the customary poses of the child with hands folded and the group of children and the child and family.  What I am wondering about are photos during mass.  Being an avid scrapbooker I have always wanted... READ MORE

Does your Family Have Sacrament Traditions?

Faith & Family Wants to Hear From You

Faith & Family magazine is compiling a sacraments guide for our Spring 2011 issue and we want you input.

Specifically, senior writer Lori Hadacek Chaplin is seeking family stories and traditions related to Baptism, First Communion, First Confession, or Confirmation.

If you would like to share something your family does to commemorate these special occasions, please leave a comment here .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) and I will forward your information. If Lori can use it, she will be in touch with you. Thanks!

Marriage Building Parishes

How does your parish support your marriage?

This week, I have had the honor and pleasure of being a speaker at the annual National Association of Catholic Family Life Ministers meeting at Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio.  They tell me that Cincinnati is a very nice city, but I’ll admit that I haven’t stepped off the campus since I arrived and am headed home tomorrow—so it looks like I’m going to have to plan a return visit to taste the...
