Fighting Our Crosses

and learning to see them a different way

Colleen Duggan offers a lovely reflection over at Catholic Digest, in which she shares some beautiful insight she gained about “fighting her crosses” through the words of her young son.

It’s typically the little stuff Jesus wants me to surrender — the wiggle worm sitting next to me, the request for one more cup of water, or reading the same picture book for the 1000th time. These are the things He wants, the things that make Him happy.

Definitely read the whole thing. You’ll be glad you did.

Lent 2011: Decisions, Decisions, Decisions

Where is God in the process?

It’s Ash Wednesday. So of course I’ve decided what to “do” and “not do” for Lent 2011. Or so I thought.

All set. Got it covered. It’s gonna be great. Er, or not.

Every time I’ve turned around during the last 2 days, I’ve see another great post or I’m privy to another lively conversation in which people are saying, “Here are some ideas for enriching your Lenten journey.” It’s a tremendous blessing... READ MORE

Time Is on Our Side

Taking advantage of a "late Lent"?

Are you preparing for Lent yet? I ask because, well, doesn’t it seem like we have an eternity to do so this year, with Easter falling so late in the Church calendar?

It has created an interesting dynamic in my circles. So many people I know are saying things like, “Man, I never say this, but I’m so ready for Lent,” “I feel like we should be in Lent already,” and “When does Lent begin again? It seems... READ MORE

Just One Small Thing

What lifts your spirits and gets you through the day?

I never cease to be amazed how much it invigorates me when I have the time and energy to start my day with a long shower, do my hair, apply my makeup, and slip on a snappy outfit—but, let’s face it, here in the real world that’s not always possible.

There have been days when all I’ve been able to accomplish is to quickly brush my teeth and throw on something that doesn’t alert the world to the fact... READ MORE

Where's the Beef?

everywhere, it seems

As I watched a little television this evening, I saw no less than four commercials for big, giant, delicious looking burgers. After each ad, I had this thought that I’d get some kind of awesome cheeseburger for lunch tomorrow—only to remember that tomorrow is Friday. No meat!

I suppose I could be annoyed at all the restaurants for reminding me of what I can’t have. But I’d like to think that maybe... READ MORE

Lenten Calendar

Adding prayer, fasting, and almsgiving to each day.

I went over to my sister’s the other day and I noticed the kids’ Lenten calendars on the fridge. I glanced over the daily resolutions.

Handwritten, in each box were little sacrifices or good works: write letter to Pat, no Wii, make my bed, no computer, draw Aunt Robyn a picture (like the one shown here by my niece Fiona).

It reminded me of Lent growing up in my house.

Mom didn’t make dessert very... READ MORE

Last Minute Lenten Ideas

From My Facebook Peeps, With Love

In addition to the 40 Bags in 40 Days challenge, we have some other Lenten aids in the works for Faith & Family readers this year. Look for an announcement about those here later today.

In the meantime, though, for the benefit of those last-minute ladies among us (You know who you are!) I thought I would share some of the ideas I got from friends on Facebook last week when I posted the simple request:... READ MORE

Fruitful Fasts

tell us about your best Lenten fast

The Holy Father’s Message for Lent is out.

It’s a meditation on justice and our need to renew our thirst for it—and be restored to it by grace.

The letter’s publication reminds me I need to think about my program of prayer and penance for this Lent.

There’s nothing wrong with the “usual” penances (giving up sweets or coffee, praying the Stations of the Cross). In the spiritual life, the rule is to... READ MORE

Packing the Boxes of My Heart

God's call in an unusual Advent

My childhood home is in the footprint of an upcoming public works project. In September, the state bought it from my parents, and they were given 90 days to vacate it.

As my parents looked for a new house, my mom began a daily prayer, “Lord, please send us the right house at the right time.”

We assume God answered her prayer, but he did it in an interesting way. My parents closed on their new house... READ MORE

How to Save Your Life

from today's Gospel

And he called to him the multitude with his disciples, and said to them, “If any man would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it; and whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel’s will save it.
—Mark 8:34-35

Lord, teach us how to suffer with You. Give us strength to follow You.
