new cell phone recommendations

A new recommendation by the NTSB calls for a ban on cell phones while driving.

Washington (CNN)—Federal accident investigators Tuesday called for a nationwide ban on the use of cell phones and text messaging devices while driving.

The recommendation is the most far-reaching yet by the National Transportation Safety Board, which in the past 10 years has increasingly sought to limit the use of portable... READ MORE

Will You GPS Track Your Teens

Safer driving or big brother?

As the mom of a teen driver, this news story about AAA’s new teen safety device caught my attention. Our Adam has been driving for over six months now and is a very responsible driver, but I’ll admit that my curiosity was piqued by a device that will track his routes and speed, that will send me a text alert when he violates traffic laws, and that’s free to Automobile Association members.

But once... READ MORE

Fight or Flight

Should we feel bad for feeling nervous?

Here’s a funny video that actually left me with a lot to think about:

I’m guessing the point of the video is that we don’t really know who people are, we shouldn’t be quick to judge and maybe just because someone looks a certain way that isn’t who they really are. I get it. And the video is cute (and kinda sweet somehow, when all the bikers cheer them on for being brave). So not to ruin a good moment,... READ MORE

Playing It Safe May Not Be Safe

Here’s another child development theory telling us the opposite of what the previous child development theory said; take it with salt or salt-substitute as your favorite diet study suggests.

I find I’m most persuaded by theories that confirm my own thoughts on the matter, so I like this one.

It suggests that today’s playgrounds, where the slides and monkey bars are removed, are so “safe” they inhibit... READ MORE

Hats Off to Cuteness & Sun Protection

Wallaroo UPF 50+ Collection is a Winner

Hats can be as addictive as shoes. One year, when we were planning a summer vacation, Dan shopped for sun hats for the both of us beforehand. After he made a few purchases, I remember telling him, “I think we’ve exhausted our hat budget for the month.”

Which was a joke. Because we have no hat budget, of course.

But as the temperatures grow warmer and the summer approaches, I am beginning to think... READ MORE

Slowing Down

A reminder to take it easy...

Once again, I’ve had a reminder to take it easy when I’m behind the wheel, especially when we have unpredictable weather and I’m in a rush. This morning, a dear friend and her daughter were in a very bad accident and flipped their SUV.  The photos of the event show it completely overturned and looking very “squished”.  Amazingly, both walked away from the accident uninjured, thanks to airbags and... Body Scans and My Fear of Flying

with baby too!

This Friday will find me flying across the country to sunny California with an infant in tow. Though I’ve flown with infants many times before, this trip has me feeling a bit more daunted than usual.

Every time I turn around, it seems someone has another horror story to tell about the new security measures they faced at the airport. Have any of you flown with children lately? Maybe you can help me... READ MORE

Egg Recall

Have you checked yours?

I’m sure many of you have seen this already, but in case you haven’t: a new outbreak of salmonella poisoning has led to an egg recall.

The FDA has details about it here.

New Driver on the Road

Who taught your kids?

Yesterday, as I was busy flying (back) to Philadelphia for this week’s Catholic Marketing Network and Catholic Writers Conferences, a milestone was occurring at my home.  Greg and Adam braved the DMV and Adam passed his driver’s permit test, so he is now ready to hit the road.  In California, teens can obtain their permits at age 15 and a half, but Adam’s a bit on the old side and will turn sixteen... Drowning Doesn't Look Like Drowning

an important summertime reminder for parents

All of us watch our children carefully and count heads around pools, lakes, and other bodies of water.

But would you really know if your child was drowning?

You might think so, but if you’re like me, this post by maritime safety blogger Mario Vittone will be a potentially life-saving eye-opener:

Drowning Doesn’t Look Like Drowning

As Vittone describes in the post, most of think that a typical “person... READ MORE
