Egg Recall
Posted by Arwen Mosher in News on Thursday, August 19, 2010
I’m sure many of you have seen this already, but in case you haven’t: a new outbreak of salmonella poisoning has led to an egg recall.
The FDA has details about it here.
New Driver on the Road
Posted by Lisa Hendey in Family on Tuesday, August 03, 2010
Yesterday, as I was busy flying (back) to Philadelphia for this week’s Catholic Marketing Network and Catholic Writers Conferences, a milestone was occurring at my home. Greg and Adam braved the DMV and Adam passed his driver’s permit test, so he is now ready to hit the road. In California, teens can obtain their permits at age 15 and a half, but Adam’s a bit on the old side and will turn sixteen... READ MORE
Drowning Doesn't Look Like Drowning
Posted by Danielle Bean in Health on Monday, July 12, 2010
All of us watch our children carefully and count heads around pools, lakes, and other bodies of water.
But would you really know if your child was drowning?
You might think so, but if you’re like me, this post by maritime safety blogger Mario Vittone will be a potentially life-saving eye-opener:
Drowning Doesn’t Look Like Drowning
As Vittone describes in the post, most of think that a typical “person... READ MORE

Seen this, which has been making the ‘net rounds?
I thought it would make an excellent punctuation mark for Lisa’s post last week.
True Confessions: Distracted Driving
Posted by Lisa Hendey in Just me on Saturday, June 19, 2010
This week’s latest Pew study on Adults and Distracted Driving has me contemplating how many times I place my own life and the lives of my loved ones at risk when I drive in a distracted fashion.
The study reported that a shocking 47% of adult drivers admit to either sending or reading a text message while driving. Compared to the 34% of teens (16-17 year olds) who ‘fess up about this “no no”, we’re... READ MORE
Kids Who Climb

When my daughter was a toddler, she hardly ever got hurt.
I’m not bragging here. It wasn’t due to my vigilance as a parent. It was just that Camilla rarely put herself in situations where it was possible for her to get hurt.
For instance, if she was in need of amusement, she’d find some blocks or some books and spend half an hour stacking cubes or turning pages. If she was feeling especially spunky,... READ MORE
Baby Sling
Posted by Rachel Balducci in Family on Friday, March 26, 2010
I have never used a baby sling with any of my newborns—slings weren’t en vogue when I had the older boys and it just wasn’t on my radar a few years ago when Henry was born.
Now it seems slings are everywhere—and I have some friends who swear by them. I was all set to purchase or borrow a sling when our new baby arrived, but now I’m reading about this sling recall and thinking twice.
What are your thoughts? Did you have good luck with using a sling? Was it easier on your back than a traditional front carrier? Pros and cons would be much appreciated.
Stranger Danger and Happy Holy Week

This week on the podcast (click here to listen or click on the player above), some great listener feedback from Maryan Vander Woude prompts Arwen, Sarah and me to have a great discussion on the topic of how to inform children in an age appropriate way about issues of physical safety. We discuss the challenges of everyday situations such as how to handle little boys who need to use a public restroom... READ MORE
How to Protect Your Privacy on Facebook
Posted by Melissa Wiley in Reviews on Tuesday, March 09, 2010
One of my 14-year-old daughter’s presents this Christmas was her own Facebook page. With so many of her cousins on Facebook — cousins who live clear on the other side of the continent — we wanted her to be a part of the extended family conversation.
But we’re cautious parents, protective of our kids’ privacy and safety. Facebook’s privacy settings can be a pain for people of any age to navigate,... READ MORE
Is Your Car Safe?
Posted by Lisa Hendey in News on Wednesday, February 24, 2010
As I work today, Aiko Toyoda, President of Toyota, is testifying before Congress, rightly answering for lapses in safety and possibly even cover ups within Toyota. The recall has been sweeping, and also surprising to many of us who assumed that our Toyotas were not only efficient and resilient, but also very safe.
To view the entire list of recalled vehicle models, click here. Regardless of whether... READ MORE
