Swim Season Begins

Please review drowning prevention information today!

Swim season has begun in earnest around our home.  This weekend, we celebrated Adam’s 8th grade graduation with two days of family, food and splashes!

On Sunday, my brother Patrick II and his son Patrick III arrived, suits in hand, and spent the afternoon enjoying our pool.  This was Patrick III’s first time back in the water this year.  He will turn four in July and is at that reckless age where... READ MORE

Out Spokin’

that video gave me a tic

I just finished watching the amazing bike video posted by Danielle earlier today. I’ll admit it left me with some complicated emotions, feelings that ranged from “oh my gosh that is amazing” to “oh my gosh what if my boys decide to try that one day” to “oh my gosh I need to go lie down”.

Even before Henry broke his leg last week, I had my safety issues. I can go into those another time, as I’m too raw to deal with them right now. But I will say that the way Henry broke his leg did not involve any of my prior fear factors. So now I have the joy of adding to an already decent-sized list a few new things to fret about. I’m trying to chill out, but the odds are not stacked in my favor.

In the spirit of me not being totally neurotic, here is a cool video sent along to me a while back by Fr. Tim, my husband’s college roommate who can also, like my husband, recite large chunks of dialoge from most movies starring Clint Eastwood or Chuck Norris. This video is either Parkour, or it is footage of my boys in the backyard, I’m not sure which.

Ski Safety

What precautions are worth the effort?

This past weekend, my husband and our oldest son went skiing up in West Virginia. It was our boy’s first ski trip, and my husband had not been since before we were married.

We wound up borrowing half of the gear they needed from friends, and then buying everything else (ski stuff in Georgia in March was on pretty good sale!). When the two left for the trip, they had heavy socks, thermal undies, ski... READ MORE

Secret Blogger Identity

Does changing the names protect anything?

I was surfing the web today and noticed that at one of my sweet little stops, the blog mistress was making some changes. After blogging for several years using pseudonyms, the writer has decided to start using her children’s real names.

I have always been intrigued by the decision of some bloggers to use pseudonyms for their children. Of course there are also those bloggers who don’t refer to their... READ MORE

Peanut Recall

What do you do?

More products have recently been added to the list of foods possibly contaminated by salmonella from a Georgia peanut butter plant.

A few weeks ago, I bought a very large package of Austin Crackers from our local Sam’s Club, and today in the mail I received a letter advising me to return the crackers to the store for a full refund. Unfortunately, those crackers are long gone. By the time I started... READ MORE

Snow, Man

You never know...

In light of our discussions about how crazy cold it’s been down South lately (insert smiley face here), I wanted to let you know that there is a slight possibility that we are going to get some snow tonight.

I’ll keep you posted of course, and will be sure to take plenty of pictures of the 12-inch snowman we will very likely build. If we get even a handful of flurries, chances are good that everything in town will shut down. Schools will close, basketball games will be cancelled—we will stay tucked away in our homes and off of the wet and icy roads.

Which, if you’ve ever seen a Southerner drive in the snow, is probably exactly as it should be.

What Would You Take?

If you had to evacuate your home in minutes, what would you grab?

This past weekend, my mom and I visited Southern California and spent Saturday at Disneyland.  I hope to share a few photos of our trip this week, but today, a more serious topic is on my heart.

As you’ve likely heard, horrific wildfires are ravaging Southern California this week.  The picture you see here was taken at Disneyland on Saturday - although we were a safe distance from the fire, the sky... READ MORE

A Nation Of Busybodies?

Says You: Can We Be Too Much Our Neighbors' Keepers?
http://www.flickr.com/photos/click3200/2456353892/

Case 1. Go read this post and come back ready to say what you think.

The gist of it is a woman calling the police because a neighbor allows her kids to climb a tree. Telling the kids to get down while it appeared no one was watching them I can understand and even admire. Calling the cops after you know the mother approves?

Persnickety neighbors we have always with us. My husband often refers to an... READ MORE

Fire Extinguisher Safety

Have you checked your fire safety plan lately?

Last week, at our Parish Staff Meeting, we had the opportunity to play fireman.  The expiration dates were up on some of the office fire extinguishers, so our head of maintenance took the opportunity to bring in a fire safety consultant to do an inservice on fire extinguishers.  I have low “meeting tolerance” so I thought it was going to be boring, but I actually learned a great deal.  Best of all,... Let’s Make Helmet Hair Cool!

Safe wearing of bicycle helmets saves lives.

With gas in California well over $4.50 per gallon, I’ve taken to running errands on my bicycle in an effort to decrease my gas consumption and get a little exercise in the process.  Being married to an ER doctor, I always don my bike helmet - even for the shortest of trips.  But I’m constantly amazed by the number of riders I see who do not wear bike helmets.  The most exasperating instances for me...
