A Mother to Many

A look at a special life

I came across this wonderful video today and thought you might enjoy watching it as well.  It is a succinct look at the life of Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta and offers wonderful reminders about how the life on one person can have an impact upon so many.  Enjoy!

On this Rock

from today's Gospel

“And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the powers of death shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.”
—Matthew 16:18-19

Lord, source of eternal life and truth, give to Your shepherd, the Pope, a spirit of courage and right judgment, a spirit of knowledge and love. By governing with fidelity those entrusted to his care may he, as successor to the apostle Peter and vicar of Christ, build Your church into a sacrament of unity, love, and peace for all the world. Amen.

St. Rose of Lima

Today is the feast of St. Rose of Lima, who was the first saint canonized from the Western Hemisphere.  Her life story is worth reading.  A long version is here, and a shorter version appropriate for children (without graphic descriptions of St. Rose’s asceticism) is here.

An interesting bit of trivia: St. Rose’s feast was traditionally celebrated on August 30th, but is now celebrated on the 23rd, at least in the United States.

I found this quotation from St. Rose’s writings: “Apart from the cross there is no other ladder by which we may get to heaven.”  How incredibly true, and what a truth to remember in our daily lives!

St. Rose of Lima, pray for us.

Time for Renewal

Today's Memorial of Pope Pius X is a wonderful reminder

As I sat in morning Mass today listening to our Vicar General give a homily on the first reading and the life of Pope Pius X, I was reminded of the fact that this “Back to School” time of the year really is a moment for renewal.  Along with our children, we face new goals, challenges and opportunities.

Pope Pius X was beloved for many reasons and was well known for encouraging frequent reception... READ MORE

‘LATE HAVE I LOVED YOU’

Autumn Prayers From St. Augustine (354-430), Doctor of the Church

Our Hearts are Restless

Man desires to praise you, for he is a part of your creation; he carries his mortality with him and carries the evidence of his sin and the pr oof that you resist the proud. Still, he desires to praise you, this man who is only a particle of your creation. You have prompted him, that he should delight to praise you, for you have made us for yourself and our

Feast of St. Maximilian Kolbe

I’m late getting to this, but I don’t want to miss reminding people that today is the feast day of one of my favorite saints, Maximilian Kolbe.

Many thanks to Waltzing Matilda for sharing a feast-appropriate craft as well as a liturgical excuse for dipping marshmallows in chocolate. My kind of mom, that Matilda is!

Memorial of St. Joachim and St. Anne

Celebrating the parents of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Today, we celebrate the memorial of St. Joachim and St. Anne, parents of the Blessed Virgin Mary.  My own wonderful mother’s name is Anne, so I remember her in a special way on this feast day of the Patroness of Mothers. I was recently sharing with a friend who is expecting her first child that she can expect her relationship with her own mother to grow and blossom when she welcomes her child into... READ MORE

Feast of St. James

Almighty Father, by the martyrdom of St. James you blessed the work of the early Church. May his profession of faith give us courage and his prayers bring us strength. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.

More activities, prayers, and information.

Paul According to Paul

From June 2008 to June 2009, the Church celebrates the 2,000th anniversary of the birth of St. Paul. We offer a sketch of his life in his own words.

The Last Apostle

“I handed on to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the scriptures; that he was buried; that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the scriptures; that he appeared to Cephas [Peter], then to the Twelve.

“After that, he appeared to more than five hundred brothers at once, most of whom are still living, though... READ MORE
