Tuition, Tuition
Posted by Rebecca Teti in Family on Thursday, October 28, 2010
My friend and neighbor Eric Pavlat has an intriguing post about whether parents ought to pay for their kids’ college tuition.
It reminds me that I’ve been meaning to ask this august body how it does pay for college?
We’re saving for our kids’ educations, but given rising tuition costs the likelihood of our being able to give all our kids a “free ride” is dim unless we win the lottery, which we never... READ MORE
Painful Projects

Ever take on a project and wish you hadn’t?
We have cloth diapers: two dozen one-size pocket diapers. After 1.5 years of use, the velcro was wearing out. They stuck together in the wash, and while it’s certainly fun for the children when you pull the diapers out of the dryer in one long string, it’s not so fun for the mama.
So I got the idea to convert the velcro to snaps. And for some reason I decided... READ MORE

Stockpiling vs. Hoarding
Posted by Rachel Balducci in Family on Monday, June 28, 2010
I am a minimalist by nature, so finding groceries on sale, while exciting, doesn’t normally compel me to stock up. Why do I need five bottles of ketchup, even if it’s a really good deal? One or two will do the trick.
Lately, however, I’ve been on a couponing kick. Now that I’m keeping track of grocery store prices, I find myself thinking more about getting the items we use at the best price possible.... READ MORE
Deal Hunter
Posted by Rachel Balducci in Family on Friday, November 20, 2009
A week from today will be the day after Thanksgiving—Black Friday, that day where hordes of bargain-hunting maniacs flock to the stores in search of extra-low prices.
I have never gone shopping on that day—I’ve seen enough pictures to know it’s not my thing. But I have friends who get up every year at 3 or 4 a.m. (or don’t even go to bed on Thanksgiving!) and get nearly all their Christmas shopping done on that one day. They get it all and save a ton.
Do you join the chaos? Do you find crazy, awesome deals? Is it worth the hours of therapy I’d probably need if I got stuck in the electronics department of Sears, crushed under a sea of coupon-clippers on a mission?

Cool Tool for the Supermarket
Posted by Danielle Bean in Homemaking on Tuesday, May 05, 2009
Here’s a simple idea to help make supermarket planning and budgeting easier.
Grocery List Wizard is a handy, free site where you can create a shopping list, automatically list items by grocery aisles where they are found, estimate costs of your purchases, and print a copy to take along with you to the store.
Very handy (and the fact that a Catholic family man is behind this operation comes as no surprise)!
