Early to Bed, Early to Rise? Maybe Not
Posted by Danielle Bean in Family on Tuesday, June 09, 2009
I thought yesterday’s Coffee Talk discussion about family bedtimes and Arwen’s ongoing discussion of sleepless babies made for some very interesting reading.
Bedtimes are something I’ve thought about a lot in recent years.
You see, we used to be a 7:30 pm bedtime kind of family. I loved that!
But then those grade school kids we were so fond of pushing around had the nerve to grow up into middle-sized... READ MORE
Sweet Summertime
Posted by Rachel Balducci in Family on Thursday, June 04, 2009
This is our first week out of school. Some years I take a few weeks to just do “whatever” during the day—and that tends to backfire on me. This year, I have tackled the summer head-on by having a nice morning routine that encourages the much needed structure on which my boys thrive.
This is not about getting up and heading out the door, though we do have swim team during the week so we have places... READ MORE
Baseball Moms, Unite!

Are your kids playing baseball or softball this spring?
With 3 baseball players and 1 softball player in our family this season, after-school hours for the Bean family have been just a little bit ... insane.
Today, I offer you some sports-mom survival tips I have learned over the years.
1. Have a plan for dinner. I never like sacrificing family mealtimes for sports seasons, but when mom is standing... READ MORE
Are Naps Necessary?
Posted by Rebecca Teti in Health on Monday, May 11, 2009
This excerpt from “the Summa,” On Whether Naps Are Necessary For Salvation, will give you a good chuckle, ladies.
It’s only about adult naps, though. Toddler naps, as we all know, are absolutely necessary for salvation of mom’s sanity.
I guess that wasn’t a disputed question.
Back To Life

Tomorrow my boys go back to school. Tomorrow we get back in gear, back in the saddle, back into the real world of schedules and homework and places to go.
I had a thought last week that in a few days I’d be able to run that errand I had been putting off—I could finally get back to the store (the one that isn’t boy-friendly) to make a return. The item has been sitting in the back of the Suburban for... READ MORE
Mom’s To Do List
Posted by Rachel Balducci in Family on Tuesday, October 07, 2008
Paul and I are discussing our schedules for tomorrow. We have been planning a meet-up to pick out new cellphones (we reached the time limit on our contract to get the deep discount—yippee!) and thought we’d rendezvous at the phone store while the boys are at school.
Me: Are we on for tomorrow?
Him: Let me look at my schedule. What do you have going on?
Me, looking at my calendar: Nothing really. I... READ MORE
Confession Confessions
Posted by Danielle Bean in Faith on Monday, September 29, 2008
I finally went to Confession this past weekend.
For a long time, my goal has been to get myself and my kids who are old enough to Confession once a month, but I often fall short of that. Why is it so hard to keep myself on a regular Confession schedule?
I’d like to blame someone else for my failures, and that would be easy enough to do. At the church closest to my house, Confession is only available... READ MORE
Kids Can Do Chores
Posted by Danielle Bean in Homemaking on Wednesday, September 03, 2008
When we talked about chores on Monday I promised you some lists.
First, I’ll share my simple chore chart. I’ve never been much of one for charts, but I find that a little bit of organization keeps us on track throughout the school year. You can see my kids’ Monday-Friday chore assignments here.
This simple system ensures that the older kids pitch in with the necessary stuff (meals, laundry, clean... READ MORE
The Way Things Don’t Have To Be

I like this observation from Zoom Times, the blog of the alternate universe which is a friend of mine’s family life. The post is about how she fits both prayer and fitness into her life using a method she calls “stacking the deck.” Follow the link to read what that means, but I was edified by her description of how she talked herself out of resenting an annoying task—in this case, mowing the lawn....
