Summer Learning
Posted by Lisa Hendey in Family on Monday, June 30, 2008
The calendar may read “summer”, but in our house the learning continues. I learned early on in Eric’s elementary school career that three months without math, reading and writing equates to educational havoc once my boys return to the regular school schedule. Our summer learning schedule has made me envious of our friends who are brave enough to take on homeschooling – what a blessing to “do school”... READ MORE

Question
I am headmaster at a prestigious private high school that has a long tradition of maintaining an “honor code,” in which students are not supervised on exams but the penalty for cheating is expulsion. Six high school seniors stole copies of their semester exam and used them to study for finals. After a long and painful series of interviews, I managed to get some of the students to admit what... It’s August and the end of summer is on the horizon. Here, we won’t go “back to school” until the second week of September, but I know many of you start earlier than that.
There’s no time like the present for squeezing a bit more fun from summertime with your family. What have you planned to do this summer but haven’t gotten around to yet? A day trip to the water park? Berry picking? A trip to the... READ MORE
Easing into Reality

Having returned home from our “last hurrah” camping trip, I confronted the disquieting fact that for one of my kids school starts in six days. I’m not one of those moms who parties on the first day of school at the thought of freedom and a return to scheduled life. Rather, I’m the mom who sits in the parking lot crying and missing my kids until I arrive early to pick them up and whisk them back... READ MORE

You know the drill. You pull out your child’s lunchbox, lovingly pack a sandwich with just the right snacks, and it all comes back to you at the end of the day — uneaten. Or maybe you open a lunchbox at night to find unfamiliar junk food wrappers. Upon questioning, your child sheepishly admits to trading lunches with a classmate.
Eating a healthy lunch gives your child the fuel... READ MORE
At Home in a New School

Congratulations to my fourth grade nephew Patrick and his fellow schoolmates at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic School in Long Beach, Mississippi.
Almost three years after the utter devastation of their former Catholic school buildings in Hurricane Katrina, the children went back to school today at a newly opened, state of the art school building! For the past three years, the students have been... READ MORE

As I sat in morning Mass today listening to our Vicar General give a homily on the first reading and the life of Pope Pius X, I was reminded of the fact that this “Back to School” time of the year really is a moment for renewal. Along with our children, we face new goals, challenges and opportunities.
Pope Pius X was beloved for many reasons and was well known for encouraging frequent reception... READ MORE
