The Best Christmas Pageant Ever
Posted by Lisa Hendey in Just me on Wednesday, December 17, 2008
The lights dimmed, the second graders struggled to stand still, a microphone turned up too high let off a high pitched moan, and the opening notes of the first song rang out marking the debut of “Christmas at Bethlehem Gulch” and this Catholic school mom’s last chance to watch one of my children perform in our school’s annual Christmas pageant.
With Adam in eighth grade, I’ve found myself feeling... READ MORE
What a trip!

Today, I played hooky from my desk job and went on a field trip with Adam’s 8th grade class to a theater presentation.
The play we saw was called “Encore” and was a two act presentation of several classics by five great authors: Edgar Allan Poe, Washington Irving, W.W. Jacobs, Guy de Maupassant and Mark Twain. In anticipation of the trip, Adam’s class had read and discussed the stories, so they were... READ MORE

I’ve just returned from back-to-school night at our local parish school. Though it’s a quick walk—mere blocks away—it’s a long night if you have multiple kids in school.
We begin in the chapel, which is where Sr. Principal feels safest delivering her annual, “Parents are the first teachers” lecture, which is always lovely and inspiring—but sometimes a little bittersweet in the sense that there are... READ MORE
School Mass

Boy I’ve missed that sound… the sound of 700 plus voices, in sing songy unison, proclaiming
“Good morning, Father Rob!”
to our pastor’s opening welcome at the start of his homilies. At our opening Mass this morning, Father Rob admitted that he’d missed it too - the sound of all of those wonderful young voices, gathered together for the Eucharist.
Father Rob came to us last October, following on the... READ MORE

In a special “extra” episode of Catholic Moments (click here to listen), I chat with our wonderful bloggers from Faith and Family Live - Danielle Bean, Rebecca Teti and Arwen Mosher.
Our conversation ranges from Back to School, to getting everything done around our homes (or not!), to how to share the faith with and catechize our children in our homes. Since we missed out on having Rachel join us, we’ll have to get together again soon and would love your ideas for topics! Share your feedback at 206-339-9272, comment here on the blog or email lisa@catholicmom.com.

Not What I Had In Mind
Posted by Rebecca Teti in Family on Monday, September 01, 2008
Our eldest kids have lived with their clutter-phobic mom for 11 and 9 years respectively, and I expect some things to rub off, you know? So when I left for a grocery run this afternoon, leaving them the assignment of distributing newly purchased school supplies into backpacks for tomorrow, I naturally assumed they’d take the items out of the bags, transfer them to the dining room table and pack methodically, using their classroom check-lists. I certainly did not expect them to plop down on the floor among the bags in an unwrapping frenzy worthy of Christmas morning.
Behold the sight that met my eyes—right in the hall—upon my return. And the mess extended in three directions beyond the borders of the photograph. Foolish mother! As soon as I saw this I had to laugh at the disconnect between my mental picture (bags all packed and neatly by the door, with excess supplies neatly put away) and the reality I’d have expected had I given any thought to it at all. Someone was asking for evidence that kids live here?
The backpacks are packed, though. So that’s something.

Time for Renewal
Posted by Lisa Hendey in Faith on Thursday, August 21, 2008
As I sat in morning Mass today listening to our Vicar General give a homily on the first reading and the life of Pope Pius X, I was reminded of the fact that this “Back to School” time of the year really is a moment for renewal. Along with our children, we face new goals, challenges and opportunities.
Pope Pius X was beloved for many reasons and was well known for encouraging frequent reception... READ MORE
