Whither Weather?

how's winter treating you?

On Groundhog’s Day my husband joked that the little guy came out of his hole and declared that winter had already been over for six weeks.

Anyone else feel like the season is missing this year? Here in Michigan, we usually get buried by at least a couple snowstorms each year, and have a week or two of single-digit temperatures. Those things have not happened this winter. We’ve had rain instead, and... READ MORE

The Praying Family

Is it important?

Family prayers in our home has had a wide variety of configurations. Over the years, we have adjusted our approach based on the mathematical ratio of babies to toddlers to adults, factoring into the equation that (up until eighteen months ago) Child = boy (which many days felt the same as Child x 2).

We had to keep these details in mind in order to stay sane. Because I made the mistake, in the early... READ MORE

As Corny As ...

Culinary Wednesday!

As corny as ... Kansas in August?  How about as Pennsylvania in July?

Year ago, when I was a child, we had to wait until August for decent corn on the cob, since that was when local corn came ripe in my home state.

But over the years, earlier ripening varieties have been developed. In addition, newer types of corn holds their sugar content longer than formerly, so even the out of state stuff we’ve... READ MORE

Rejoice!

The season for it

Our parish does First Communion on Easter. In his homily Sunday morning our pastor talked about why they do this: because they want to form a connection in the children’s minds and hearts between the Resurrection and the Eucharist.

He told a story of a little boy in the first communion class a few years ago who bounded up to him before Mass and shouted, “Father, Father! I can’t believe I get to receive... READ MORE

Fresh

spring approaches!

It’s spring!

Well, kind of. Here in our part of Michigan, we have highs in the 30s for the next week, and can expect at least one or two more snowfalls before the warmer season begins in earnest. Today I let the kids go outside to play and they wore heavy jackets, hats, and mittens.

But the winter’s snow accumulation has thawed. Tree branches sport tiny buds. The ground is getting softer, and with... READ MORE

Groaning Yet Grateful

Excited for Lent?

I remember, during college, going to Mass on the last day before Lent and looking at the crucifix, the statues and icons, somewhat wistfully. They would be shrouded in purple for the duration of the penitential season. I missed them, and all the purple got me down a little.

Some people get excited as Lent approaches, but I am not one of them. I’ve always felt depressed on Ash Wednesday, facing the... READ MORE

Preparation Season

on keeping Advent

Two years ago, I blogged about my new resolution to keep Advent.

I now make that resolution every year. In some ways it’s gotten easier, but I don’t know if it’ll ever be really easy.

In order to keep Advent and Christmas in their proper seasons, we have to hold off on celebrating Christmas while the world is singing about “the most wonderful time of the year.” Then, just when we are given the chance... READ MORE

Dressed for Autumn

What do you wear in the cooler weather?

Summer is officially coming to a close here in Michigan. Last Sunday we sweated through Mass, this weekend we had to bring jackets.

I abhor the heat of summer, so I’m thrilled that cooler weather is on its way. We’ll still have some hot days, but for the most part those are over until next year.

One of my favorite things about fall is the clothes. Since our resident fashion blogger is on maternity... READ MORE

Endless Summer Evenings

My confession about bedtime

It’s past 8:30 on a typical summer evening, and do I know where my children are?

Sure. But where they are is probably not the same place as where they should be: in bed.

Here’s my true mom confession: in this season, my children do not go to bed “on time.”

I can name many reasons why this happens. The sun doesn’t set until 9:00, and it doesn’t get really dark until almost 10:00, so it’s hard to convince... READ MORE
