Have you ever been to a chapel or church dedication? A few months ago I attended one at Holy Apostles College and Seminary. As we often hear of churches merging or closing, it was such a blessing to be at this event.

Have you seen the Holy Father’s new Letter to Seminarians?
It’s made some headlines because in it he defends priestly celibacy, but it is much broader than that.
It’s a lovely reflection on the meaning of the priesthood and what it takes to sustain a vocation if one is called.
In his opening he recalls another time when the priesthood seemed outdated and unnecessary:
When in December 1944 I was drafted for military service, the company commander asked each of us what we planned to do in the future. I answered that I wanted to become a Catholic priest. The lieutenant replied: “Then you ought to look for something else. In the new Germany priests are no longer needed”. I knew that this “new Germany” was already coming to an end, and that, after the enormous devastation which that madness had brought upon the country, priests would be needed more than ever.
In our time, too, priests are needed more than ever, and the pope’s short letter is filled with practical advice about how to prepare for that life.
