Daily Lenten Meditations

«  March 2010  »

Sun Mon Tue Wed Thu Fri Sat
  • Pray Light a candle. Every time you pass that candle today, offer a prayer of thanks. Don’t ask for anything. Just thank him.
  • Fast Don’t cut corners. Even if no one will know, complete today’s work thoroughly.
  • Give Touch is a powerful thing. Make an effort today to touch your children: a hug, a shoulder rub, a tousled head -- especially the bigger ones
1
  • Pray Make five minutes in the morning, at midday and in the evening to be still, silent, and alone, only asking God to infuse your soul with his will.
  • Fast No noise today. Turn off the TV, the radio, the iPod. Find God in the silence.
  • Give Pay particular unsolicited attention to your least demanding child today.
2
  • Pray Begin a gratitude journal. At the end of the day, jot down five things for which you are grateful. Think upon these things.
  • Fast Remember the first time you had a moment alone with your first child. What did you promise him? Do that. Be that.
  • Give We can only expect what we inspect. For every task you assign today, follow through and before it’s truly finished ensure that there is praise from you.
3
  • Pray “My sheep listen to my voice. I know them and they follow me." -- John 10:27
  • Fast Every time a child interrupts you today, stop what you are doing and look into his eyes as he talks.
  • Give “Kind words can be short and easy to speak, but their echoes are truly endless.” -- Blessed Teresa of Calcutta Speak kindly all day long.
4
  • Pray Ask God to show you how weak and small you are. Open your heart to see it.
  • Fast Don’t argue today. As much as possible give up, give in, give way.
  • Give When you are tempted to put on the TV for kids today, pull out a stack of favorite picture books instead. Invite the kids to join you on the couch.
5
  • Pray Take a walk, even if it’s cold or raining. Leave your iPod at home.
  • Fast Think of someone whose life you are tempted to envy and then choke out these words: Thank you, God, for the blessings you have given to X. Help me to see my own.
  • Give Think about the kind of person your husband married. Be that person for him today.
6
7
  • Pray "Love consumes us only in the measure of our self-surrender." -- St. Therese of Lisieux
  • Fast As you go about your daily routine today, remember that you are expecting someone very important for dinner tonight. Together with your children, work towards your husband’s homecoming as if you were expecting to welcome a king back to his castle.
  • Give “You can do nothing with children unless you win their confidence and love by bringing them into touch with oneself, by breaking through all the hindrances that keep them at a distance. We must accommodate ourselves to their tastes, we must make ourselves like them.” -- St. John Bosco
8
  • Pray Take this quote to prayer today and listen to God’s answer: “Real love is demanding. I would fail in my mission if I did not tell you so. Love demands a personal commitment to the will of God.” -- John Paul II
  • Fast Stop looking for encouragement and approval. Genuinely encourage and affirm someone else instead.
  • Give Let your child choose a huge stack of picture books (use that word “huge” when you ask her to gather them). Read them all to her today.
9
  • Pray Persevere. “He who does not give up prayer cannot possibly continue to offend God habitually. Either he will give up prayer, or he will give up sinning.” -- St. Alphonsus Liguori
  • Fast Don’t forget that the only pedestal you need ever stand on, is the one your husband and children build for you.
  • Give Focus on your home today. The world can find another volunteer, but your husband and children have only you.
10
  • Pray Insist on quiet from all your children during naptime today. Pray the Divine Mercy chaplet.
  • Fast We’re half way through. Compare yourself now only to yourself when Lent began. Tweak the plan.
  • Give Reach out to a local friend today. Reconnect.
11
  • Pray Ask God to make you humble and lowly.
  • Fast Don’t compare or complain. Do compliment.
  • Give Pack a picnic and go somewhere to eat it with your children. If the weather is prohibitive, build a tent in the living room and it eat there. Sit on the ground with them. Be fully present.

Left Behind

What Would You Do?

At the end of a quick but mildly frustrating trip to Target this morning, I got to the car to discover an item had been left on the bottom of the cart.

The bleach that I tucked away while Henry and I were shopping went unnoticed by me or the clerk, and I unwittingly walked out of the store without paying for this $1.67 item.

I mention the price because as I stood there and stared with dismay at the... READ MORE

Trade in Your Old Baby Gear and Save

Babies R Us offers special deal

If you need to replace an old crib, high chair, car seat, stroller, or play yard, the next few weeks are a great time to do it.

Between now and Saturday, February 20, Babies R Us will accept your old baby equipment and offer you 25% off a replacement item.

Get rid of your outdated equipment and get a discount on the new stuff ... sounds like a good deal to me.

Happy shopping!

God is Everywhere

especially in the details

My husband and older boys are going on a camping trip this weekend, the preparations for which have now become my full-time job.

I spent over two hours this morning looking for long john underwear in stores that are now prominently featuring bathing suits. Cold weather clothes were nowhere to be found.

But somehow I managed to squeeze blood from a turnip. I circled and double-backed and picked through... READ MORE

Support a Catholic Artist

amazing prints now available

Isn’t this image of Our Lady beautiful? Every time I see it, it stops me in my tracks.

It’s a painting by the contemporary artist Cameron Smith. He has done a similar painting of the Sacred Heart that you can see at his blog.

The good news is that prints of these inspiring works are available for purchase. I can’t think of a lovelier addition to your home or a more thoughtful gift for any Catholic... READ MORE

Helpful Strangers

Staying sane with "the little way"

This morning I took the five boys out to do a little shopping. It would have been nice to have the shopping cart pictured here.

Each year, we draw names among the brothers to exchange “Secret Saint” gifts, and I brought them to the local sports emporium to pick out their presents for each other.

At one point, as I stood with one boy to look at an item, I saw Henry bolt. In the two seconds it took... READ MORE

Don't Want to Brave the Mall?

Take advantage of free shipping from online retailers!

Some people have their Christmas shopping done, and those people should receive a hearty pat on the back.

But for those of us who haven’t yet finished, and who (like me) dread the thought of setting foot in a mall during this crazily busy time of year, never fear! There is another option.

Over at freeshippingday.com, they’ve gathered a list of online retailers - 678 in total - who will be offering free shipping promotions tomorrow, Thursday, December 17th.

Some of them will have minimum purchase requirements in order to qualify for free shipping, but the site says that more than half will offer free shipping on all purchases. With delivery by Christmas Eve, that’s a great deal for the mall-haters among us.

Hop over to freeshippingday.com to check it out! Maybe you can get your shopping finished tomorrow.

Secret Santa

My Wish List this Year

In a family of seven kids we didn’t have enough money to buy a present for each person so we would pick a name out of a hat for secret Santa.

I remember family shopping trips at the local mall. At the entrance of the mall, mom handed over a twenty dollar bill and a warning to meet back in the shoe department by 8:00.

Five brother-in-laws later, we still do secret Santa among the siblings, but instead... READ MORE

Peace and Joy

at your local grocery store

This morning I loaded up two-year-old Henry to do our Thanksgiving shopping. We had to hit two stores—the mega-warehouse followed by our regular grocers.

By the time I neared the wholesale club, I could see the parking lot was already near-capacity. Only the very furthest spaces were still available and I started chiding myself for getting such a late start.

I took a deep breath and decided to say... READ MORE
