Much Ado About the Flu

How are you planning to avoid illness this year?

Last year, in the midst of the swine flu frenzy we talked about flu shots and faith.

This year, though there seems to be less of a general panic about getting everyone vaccinated against this year’s flu virus, the shots are still on my mind. I was happy to get myself and all of the kids vaccinated at a local drug store last week.

According to Flu.gov, this year’s flu vaccine “protects against an... READ MORE

Confessions of a Whiny Mom

“I feel like I’ve been whining for two days straight,” I whined to my husband last night as we went to bed.

“You have,” he responded matter-of-factly.

I do have an excuse. I’m sick. Or to give you a better idea of what I’ve been like to live with lately, I should probably say, “I’m siiiiiiiiick ...”

I don’t get sick often. I am sure my family is grateful for this.

This particular illness comes with... READ MORE

St. Francis Prayer for Sickies

(the stomach virus version)

All that talk about stomach viruses yesterday made me remember this prayer I wrote while in the throes of a stomach bug a few years back.

I thought I’d share it with you all here:

St. Francis Prayer (stomach virus version)

Lord,
Make me an instrument of Your healing love;
Where there is vomit let me bring Lysol;
Where there are boogers, Kleenex;
Where there is fever, Tylenol;
Where there is boredom,... READ MORE

5 Ways to Survive a Stomach Virus

'Tis the season!

I got a Facebook message from a mom of 5 the other day:

“How many of your kids have ever hand vomiting at the same time? I’ve got 3/5, a fourth with a bucket. The 5 month old is the only one not puking. Do you have any tips besides double-wrapping the beds if possible?”

The answer to the first question is something like six kids at once, I think. And when I say “at once” I mean at once. As in, all... READ MORE

The Mission of The Sick

Benedict celebrates Our Lady of Lourdes
(AP Photo/Gregorio Borgia)

The Pope celebrated Mass for thousands of the sick in Rome this morning.

It was part of his observance of the feast of Our Lady of Lourdes and World Day of the Sick.

Adding to the occasion, the relics of St. Bernadette were present.

His homily is just lovely, but this meditation on a line from St. Paul is amazing, I think:

From this text, which contains the foundation and practice of the sacrament... READ MORE

When Mom is Sick ...

... Everything Falls Apart

If you follow Danielle Bean on facebook and twitter (like I do), you would know that she was feeling under the weather last week. I called Danielle the other night to ask how she was feeling. As we chatted I recalled the times growing up when my mom was sick.

Everything seemed to fall apart when mom was sick. Even as a kid I recognized that things weren’t quite right without mom. “What do you mean... READ MORE

The Latest Issue

from the House of Tissue

As I write this, the hum of the jet nebulizer fills the front room. One boy is tied to the couch, doing yet another breathing treatment before going to bed. There are coughs and snifs and slow moving bodies all around.

Last night was filled with the start of breathing treatments, which continued all throughout today. Two boys were home sick, with coughs and glassy eyes. Many movies were watched, many puzzles were assembled. Now we head off to bed with itchy noses and scratchy throats. I’m hoping tonight’s soup did something for our health—and if nothing else, it soothed our souls (that would be Cheese and Veggie Soup for the Testosterhome Soul).

I noticed lots of other sickies as I cruised the Internet (Arwen, I am especially praying for you and your fever!). If you are ailing, I hope you feel well soon. Lay as low as you can and drink lots of liquids!

Small Reminder of Big Love

just when I needed it most

We’ve been a bit sick around here.

Last night, just as I was feeling overwhelmed by unswept floors, cracker crumbs on couch cushions, and an unseemly number of coughing, whining children ...

The one coughing, whining child I had actually managed to get into his bed called out for me. Crying, of course.

“Mamaaaaaaa!” he cried. “We forgot to bwush my toofbwush.”

I knew what he meant. And I also knew... READ MORE
