Sick and Tired?

Does your house have the "yuckies"?

I’ve got a sick teenager at my house.  As I type this, he’s swaddled in my bed with a wet washcloth on his head, fighting a headache.  I think it has a lot to do with today being his first “real” day back at school, with too many recent nights of not enough sleep, and with a return to the grind.

But we also seem to be surrounded right now with people who aren’t feeling well.  The flu, colds, and other... READ MORE

Much Ado About the Flu

How are you planning to avoid illness this year?

Last year, in the midst of the swine flu frenzy we talked about flu shots and faith.

This year, though there seems to be less of a general panic about getting everyone vaccinated against this year’s flu virus, the shots are still on my mind. I was happy to get myself and all of the kids vaccinated at a local drug store last week.

According to Flu.gov, this year’s flu vaccine “protects against an... READ MORE

Smashed Berry

I can't phone home

While some of the ladies have been discussing teens and technology limits, I have been in self-imposed exile thanks to a faulty rollerball on my Blackberry cellphone.

The ball fell out yesterday and today I tried to “fix it” using superglue. You can imagine how unfixed my phone now is. It is incredibly frustrating to see a new text on the screen, but be unable to see all of the text or even reply.... READ MORE

Fear, Faith, and Flu Shots

Where shall we put our trust?

Last week, when I updated my facebook status with a simple “Flu shot today, I hope” I was a bit surprised to be deluged with people telling me not to get one.

I shouldn’t have been.

I know how many people feel about vaccines and I know many of the stories that circulate this time of year. You can find someone to tell you pretty much any bad thing about the flu shot—from it actually making you more... READ MORE

Green with Hormones

A complicated season

First off, I am posting this picture of a sweet, precious baby because when looking for pictures to describe “morning sickness” and “feeling seasick” the images were so much less delightful. I decided I am going to just keep my eyes on the prize during these challenging few weeks.

Having said that, things are actually going very well. If you got to listen to last week’s podcast, you will notice I... READ MORE

Queasy Living

Share your tricks!

I’ll cut to the chase—I don’t feel so good. That’s a good sign, I know, but it still hurts!

When I was pregnant with Henry I found that sipping ginger ale and nibbling saltines took a bit of the edge off—I didn’t feel one hundred percent, but it helped, even just a bit.

This time around, I am having powerade to drink and munching on pretzel rods. That’s the best I can come up with right now.

What about you—do you have anything you swear by? What does the trick—and I’ll throw in some kind of major award for whoever suggests the thing that gets me off the couch and feeling fine!

Days Like This

Mama said we'd have 'em

I probably shouldn’t show you this picture, but it’s just such a good representation of the kind of morning we had around here. Feeling kinda blech, not running at a hundred percent, rainy-day ennui. Somehow this shot captures it all perfectly.

We’re doing better this afternoon, but that kind of morning can really affect a person’s day, you know? Not exactly a manic Monday, but something equally intense.

UPDATED TO ADD: Can I admit something here? I was telling Danielle today that when I looked at this picture, after I took it this morning, I cried I laughed so hard. So that right there speaks volumes. In my weakened state, I just found it so funny. It also felt great to laugh so much that tears streamed down my cheeks, as my son looked on in confusion. Anyway, who has the best caption for this photo? Winner gets a Chicken Soup for the Soul Moms and Sons book. Maybe there’s something in there about your mother being delerious.

Sickness Safety

get well, stay well

Have I mentioned that we’ve been sick? Have I told you all about the fevers and the body aches and the vomiting and the sleepless nights?

Yes?

Oh.

Well, my family’s recent struggles with a sinister virus (we are on the mend!) started me thinking about the importance of keeping kids safe when there’s illness in the house. Medicating small children when you yourself are sick and/or lacking sleep can... READ MORE

Interesting

Get your chicken soup ready

I just came across this site that predicts when the flu is going to hit your area.

Google Flu Trends has found that certain term searches are good indicators of what ailments people are experiencing in various parts of the country. According to the site, it uses “aggregated Google search data to estimate flu activity in your state up to two weeks faster than traditional systems.”

Definitely worth... READ MORE
