Carols for Christmas

An old songbook becomes part of a family tradition

When I was growing up we had the tradition of waiting until Christmas Eve to put up our tree.

After the tree was decorated (and the tinsel was blown onto the tree ... one strand at a time), we would sing Christmas carols.

Every year we would use these old songbooks from the ‘70s that were distributed as an insert in the local paper.

The back of the songbook has a picture of a paperboy holding up... READ MORE

Moral Support

Spending time with Mom on the Chattanooga Choo Choo

On this blog I’ve shared with readers the long road of my singing career, from singing in the shower to winning the state talent competition.

If you recall, winning the state talent competition won me a ticket to Vermont to compete in the North East talent competition.

Mom roped me ... er, I mean, convinced me to join this competition, so she agreed to come with me for moral support.

The drive up... READ MORE

September!

How I love you

There is something so magical and downright inspirational about September. I know it’s all about beginnings—it has forever meant the start of school, a return to structure, a fresh start. I love September and find I always have a renewed sense of purpose as we make our way into Fall (that glorious, glorious season!).

In the midst of celebrating September 1 today, I found myself singing this little... READ MORE

Singing to Sleep

What lullabies do you love?

When I was first married and thought of my future children, one of the things I most looked forward to was singing them lullabies.

We didn’t have Michael Card’s album Sleep Sound in Jesus until I was in high school, so I don’t have memories of hearing the songs on it when I was a small child. But once we got the album, even though I was far too old for my mother to sing me to sleep any more, I promptly... READ MORE

What Would Bach Think?

Christ, the same through all time and culture

I laughed out loud when I read Jimmy Akin’s post at the National Catholic Register earlier this week: Alien Robots Worship Jesus!

While the robot version of Bach’s Jesu Joy of Man’s Desiring was interesting, I prefer a more traditional version, like the Celtic Woman one above (Though I find the gowns and dramatic lighting distracting—does anyone else find that?).

But either way, I love that Johann... READ MORE

Closet Performer

from singing in the shower to appearing on stage

I love to sing. I sing in the shower, I belt it out in the car and I even hum in the office.

I love driving with the windows down (with the music blaring) and singing at the top of my lungs. Sometimes on long car trips I put in a Broadway musical CD and pretend I’m the main character.

When I’m in my room listening to music from Oklahoma, Ragtime, Annie or any Broadway musical, I act out the part... READ MORE

One Door Closes

But Maddy's Already Moving On

American Idol fans already know that Maddy Curtis, daughter of Catholic mom blogger Barbara Curtis, was cut from the show last week.

I was disappointed, but it didn’t take long to realize that God has bigger plans for the sweet and talented Maddy. The 16 year old sold out two Haitian relief concerts last week.

I suppose I’ll stick with my decision not to watch American Idol this year, but I will... READ MORE

Yuletide Carols

being sung by my backdoor

Tonight I was upstairs getting Henry dressed for bed while the other boys, freshly showered, were also getting in their pajamas.

As I wrestled the toddler, one of the boys hollered up that someone was at the door.

“Someone’s here,” he said, “it’s the Wingates.”

“Let them in,” I said, carrying a half-dressed Henry down the stairs.

I got downstairs and walked towards the backdoor, where I was greeted... READ MORE

Moms in Choir

Do you make it work?

My little sister moved to town and promptly joined our parish’s choir.  She’s already having a good time, and hearing her talk about it makes me wistful.

I was in choir in college, and loved it.  We sang great, difficult music - Mozart, Palestrina - but in a low-stress environment with a wonderful lady as our director.  It was incredibly fun and rewarding.

Our parish has a decent choir of forty or... READ MORE
