Today, as we commemorate National Human Trafficking Awareness Day, it’s fitting to pause and reflect on the fact that an estimated 2.5 million people are currently being held in forced labor around our world. This includes well over a million children, being victimized by a crime many of us think ended years ago.

Social Justice & Health Care Reform

The bishops of Kansas City have released a joint pastoral statement on health care reform.
I think it’s important because it uses all the Catholic social justice principles to analyze proposed legislation.
Not just the life issues.
Not just the “right” to health care. (I’m using the scare quotes only because we need to be precise about what that right entails and what duties accompany it.)
They have some strong criticisms of the bills currently on the table.
But they are not on the side of those who think no reform is necessary.
See if you agree with me that this is the most thorough explanation of our Catholic duties and obligations as we wrestle with needed reform.
