Meeting "In Real Life"

When online friends meet up!

This week, I am in the midwest for some speaking and book related events and meetings.  Today, I had the opportunity to meet up with two of my online friends in “real life” encounters.  The first meeting was with one of my favorite authors, Maria Ruiz Scaperlanda.  Maria is a prolific author of such great books as Edith Stein: St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross and The Journey: A Guide For The Modern Pilgrim... How A Mom Can Use Facebook Without Going Nuts

Fire up your Facebook pages! I’ve been invited to guest-blog here at Faith and Family Live this week to talk about social media. Thanks, Danielle, for having me!

Recently, the sudden arrival of Google Buzz threw many Gmail users for a loop — especially mothers like me who were surprised to discover our children’s names and comments showing up on our Buzz pages, right there for all the world to see.... READ MORE

My Ten Commandments for Twitter

This week’s article on CNN about rocker Courtney Love’s legal woes for slamming a fashion designer on Twitter have me thinking about what laws God might have handed down to Moses had Twitter.com been the pervasive communications tool back then that it is these days.  No doubt, rather than having been inscribed upon stone tablets, the Lord’s laws would have been dictated in bite sized bullets of less... College Admissions and Facebook

To friend or not to friend...

Most of you know that my son Eric is in the throes of applying to college.  It’s likely during the next several months that I’ll be writing a great deal on this topic, not only for those of you with high school seniors, but also for those with younger children too.  You’d be amazed how quickly this process sneaks up on you, and it seems impossible to be “over-prepared” to apply to college.

So many... READ MORE

Faith & Family Shops!

show us your wares

In need of a replacement crucifix pendant, I thought I’d search first at an Etsy shop for something a little different.

Then I thought it would be nice to patronize someone from our on-line community here.

Then I thought others might like to do the same.

From there, the Faith & Family Shops! group over at Faith & Family Connect was born.

If you have an Etsy shop or any other on-line business, please make yourself known so your virtual friends can patronize you.

And if you have the shopping urge…click through to see if you can support a family business.

Big Dreams and Online Dilemmas

Giving our children realistic encouragement and managing our time online are the topics of this week's Faith & Family Live Cast.

Arwen’s recent post on Inspiring Kids to Dream Big sparked so much great conversation that we carry on that theme on this week’s Faith & Family Live Cast (Click here to listen or click on the player above).  How can we, as parents, strike a balance between encouraging our children and at the same time pursuing realistic vocations that will make use of their God given talents and abilities?  What dreams... Keeping Tabs on the Keyboard

How do you monitor time spent online?

I’m so excited about the launch of our wonderful new Faith & Family Connect online community.  I love being able to match all of the names and faces of our friends here.  Reading your stories, viewing your videos and enjoying your photos makes me feel even more a part of this family.

But I’ve also noted that since the new Connect community launched, I’m tempted to spend even more time online!  When... READ MORE

Parish Webmaster Seeks Your Input

Please help me with the redesign of my parish website!

One of the handfuls of part time jobs I’m lucky enough to enjoy is my role as Parish Webmaster for my faith community.  I work from home - frequently in my pajamas (please don’t tell my pastor!) - keeping our parish community connected and informed.

Every summer, I have a list of personal projects that I try to accomplish.  These are tasks that require more long-term focus than I typically can commit... READ MORE

Twitter Gets Trendy

Does Oprah’s jumping into the fray mean Twitter’s gone mainstream?

It’s been a big week for the quirky social networking site Twitter.com.  First came the ongoing news coverage of the “race” between celebrity Ashton Kutcher and CNN’s Breaking News Feed (think Anderson Cooper) to amass a million followers on Twitter.  Kutcher ended up having to make good on his promise to donate 10,000 mosquito net beds to a World Malaria Day charity by beating CNN to the punch. ...
