Carols for Christmas

An old songbook becomes part of a family tradition

When I was growing up we had the tradition of waiting until Christmas Eve to put up our tree.

After the tree was decorated (and the tinsel was blown onto the tree ... one strand at a time), we would sing Christmas carols.

Every year we would use these old songbooks from the ‘70s that were distributed as an insert in the local paper.

The back of the songbook has a picture of a paperboy holding up... READ MORE

Precious Memories

A song for Saturday

On Wednesday, at my grandfather’s wake, time stood still when my grandpa’s long-time mail carrier entered the room where his body rested, paid her respects, and quietly asked to sing a song for the family. Of course, we were overjoyed and grandpa’s children linked arms and stood near the foot of the bed, listening to this lovely lady in a postal service skirt and top, singing “Precious Memories” a cappella in old-timey fashion. I’d never heard this song before, but was so happy to find several wonderful versions of it on YouTube. Here’s Dolly’s - enjoy!

This Day God Gives Me

A song for Saturday

This week, we revisit one of our favorites - L’Angelus - with a live performance of a beautiful favorite.  As we prepare to celebrate all that God gives us, this song reminds me to count the many blessings in my life.  Enjoy!

Country Star Uses Talents to Deliver Pro-Life Message

Pro-Life Lyrics in Popular Music

Over at NCRegister.com, I’ve been blogging about Verve Pipe’s song “The Freshman” and the pro-life meaning behind its lyrics.

I found out about the hidden pro-life meaning in this song’s lyrics through a post at Live Action which includes many others. One of the more blatantly pro-life songs on the list was “The Call” by Matt Kennon (featured in the video above).

When the nurse asked how far along... READ MORE

Chant for Kids

A song for Saturday

This week’s Saturday song is brought to us by Gregorian Chant for Kids.  I’ve had the blessing of reviewing their entire CD and have to tell you that it is a beautiful work of art.  The chants include Chants include: Veni Creator Spiritus, Tantum Ergo, Ave Maria, Adoro Te Devote, O Salutaris Hostia, Regina Caeli, Kyrie - Gloria - Sanctus and Agnus Dei from the Missa De Angelis and Pater Noster. ... Singing to Sleep

What lullabies do you love?

When I was first married and thought of my future children, one of the things I most looked forward to was singing them lullabies.

We didn’t have Michael Card’s album Sleep Sound in Jesus until I was in high school, so I don’t have memories of hearing the songs on it when I was a small child. But once we got the album, even though I was far too old for my mother to sing me to sleep any more, I promptly... READ MORE

Closet Performer

from singing in the shower to appearing on stage

I love to sing. I sing in the shower, I belt it out in the car and I even hum in the office.

I love driving with the windows down (with the music blaring) and singing at the top of my lungs. Sometimes on long car trips I put in a Broadway musical CD and pretend I’m the main character.

When I’m in my room listening to music from Oklahoma, Ragtime, Annie or any Broadway musical, I act out the part... READ MORE

A Song for Mom

For the science-lovers among us

Many thanks to reader Laura, who sent me a link to this delightful video. Entitled “A Biologist’s Mother’s Day Song,” it’s a catchy tune and a science lesson combined. I hope you enjoy it!

(I should mention that if you’re going to be showing it to young children, you should know that it mentions eggs and sperm - in a dry, scientific manner, of course.)

"Joy, Joy For Christ Is Born"

"What Child Is This?" in full

Now that Advent is over and it’s Christmas, I’m cranking the Christmas carols.

“What Child Is This?” has always been one of my favorites, and I was proud to know all three verses… until a few years ago, when I discovered that what I had learned as the chorus of the song is actually the second half of the first verse. The second and third verses have their own unique conclusions, ones that aren’t found... READ MORE

Non-Christmas Music

What's your favorite song?

Even as we try to keep Advent at our house, there’s no way to avoid the fact that out in the world, we’re smack in the middle of “the holiday season.” You can’t walk into a store without hearing the tinny notes of “Jingle Bells” and similar songs playing over the loudspeaker.

Don’t get me wrong, I like Frosty the snowman as much as the next person. My daughter is a big fan of “snowmans” and last year... READ MORE
