The Kindness of Strangers

Who’s up for a round of good news? I’ll go first.
Yesterday I took an elderly neighbor grocery shopping with me, as I occasionally do since she can’t get around alone.
My outings with her are a bit comical because the lady is a little deaf, mostly blind from macular degeneration, and has the creaking limbs of advancing age.
None of that is laughable of course, but she’s also spunky as can be and... READ MORE
You're Great, They're Awful

I step up to the cutting counter at the fabric store. My sister’s with me, but she’s grabbing some stuff while I corral our four big kids, aged two, three, five, and five.
The staffer unfolds the first of my bolts and the children are all over the place. I think Camilla’s about to grab the scissors and try to cut the fabric herself. “Everyone please put one hand on the cart,” I tell them, and they... READ MORE

If you haven’t read Matthew Archbold’s ”$3 Lesson in Christianity,” do so!
It’s a lovely short story that happens to be true, with something for everyone: fine writing, gentle humor, a nice lesson that doesn’t hit you over the head.
And a surprisingly eloquent hot dog.
Missing Kid Moments

We took the kids to the zoo on Friday and while we were watching the penguins, we lost Camilla.
I’d been standing behind her and moved a few feet away to get a better view. She must have turned around a second later and, unable to find me, taken off looking for us. I think I realized she was missing about two minutes later.
Fortunately we were in a dead-end area of the zoo, so there was only one way... READ MORE
On Leaving the Umbrella

Recently I was shopping in a fabric store and left my purse sitting in the cart while I examined fabric fifteen feet away. It was within eyesight the whole time, but still, a woman warned me to be careful: she’d had hers stolen that way.
I smiled and thanked her, but internally I rolled my eyes. Fabric store clientele seems to consist mainly of elderly ladies and women with children under age two.... READ MORE

I lost my iPod Touch while we were on vacation. I thought it was in the rental car, but we couldn’t find it.
(The Bean children helped us look while we were visiting them. They make a great search party - not only did they leave no floormat unturned, they complimented us on the car.)
The iPod went missing on Wednesday, and was still missing when we returned the car at the airport on Sunday.
My husband... READ MORE
Peace During Mass
Posted by Arwen Mosher in Family on Monday, February 08, 2010
Some Sundays, Mass goes well. Some Sundays, not so much.
I’m sure we’re not the only family this happens to, right?
This past Sunday was challenging. Blaise needed a diaper change just as we were walking in the door. Bryan missed the processional while he was taking care of that. We forgot to bring Camilla’s little Bible and Mass books, plus we were at my parents’ parish and they don’t have a Liturgy... READ MORE
Angels in Disguise

Yesterday there was a ton of snow on the ground, and I had quite the time getting into the office. It reminded me of another scary car trip when I was driving on the highway in a torrential downpour.
I had my wipers on mega speed, and I still couldn’t see through the sheets of water. The mega speed wipers must have been the reason that my wiper blade launched off the hinges and continued to screeeeeeeeeeech... READ MORE
A Nation Of Busybodies?

Case 1. Go read this post and come back ready to say what you think.
The gist of it is a woman calling the police because a neighbor allows her kids to climb a tree. Telling the kids to get down while it appeared no one was watching them I can understand and even admire. Calling the cops after you know the mother approves?
Persnickety neighbors we have always with us. My husband often refers to an... READ MORE
