iConfess

vote for the best Confession promo video

Several excellent videos promoting Confession have turned up in my Facebook feed this Lent. Here’s one:

Only this morning, however, did I realize they’re entries in a contest to promote the Archdiocese of New York’s All Day Confession event April 18th.

There’s an amazing variety of entries, and the winner will be chosen in part by how many hits and “likes” the videos get, so go check out a few.

House of the Lord

My Favorite Place to Pray

Have you ever been to a chapel or church dedication?  A few months ago I attended one at Holy Apostles College and Seminary. As we often hear of churches merging or closing, it was such a blessing to be at this event.

The dedication began with an impressive procession: faculty, religious, priests and donors, and finally students (that’s where I was). The seminarians in the front of the procession... READ MORE

When Extra Coffee Won't Suffice

St. Joseph of Cupertino, pray for them!

Anyone know a college student who is right about now pulling all-nighters, drinking crazy amounts of espresso, and is on a first-name basis with the pizza delivery guy?

Ah, exam prep time. Seems like just yesterday. Twitch. Shudder. I still get that feeling of panic in my gut when I think about it.

There are countless reasons why I wish I lived my faith more when I was in college myself. But being... READ MORE

Shoelessly Pro-Life

A college group's witness

Taking off your shoes for the pro-life cause?

It seems strange, but it’s exactly what students at the University of Northern Colorado are doing this week, as they hold their second annual BEARfoot for Babies event. (You can read more about the event at their website.)

According to the article, the students go barefoot to show solidarity for the unborn and also as a way of starting conversations about... READ MORE

College Roll Call

Who's going where? Adopt a college kid to pray for today!

I’ve been majorly preoccupied the past few days with the launching of my son Eric off to college.  I’ll be sure to continue to share insights on that during the next few days here on the blog - we leave tonight to drive to San Francisco.  Early tomorrow morning, we’ll put Eric on a plane to Boston, where he’ll be attending pre-orientation at Harvard.  Then next Tuesday, Greg and I will fly out to... The Waiting Game

Are you waiting for letters from colleges?

I just hung up the telephone with a girlfriend who was lamenting over an experiencing we are sharing together with our sons this year… the “waiting game”.  Both of our boys, who have known one another since Kindergarten, are waiting for college admissions decisions.  And so are their moms…

Max and Eric are both great students with wonderful prospects.  Both have applied to multiple colleges around... READ MORE

Double Stuff Theology

How an Oreo Cookie Mirrors the Trinity

I teach confirmation prep to ninth graders at my local parish. The confirmation requirement for the students is to meet for an hour twice a month: once in a classroom with me and the other hour in homes with their peers. I don’t love the model, but that is why I decided to become a teacher. Instead of complaining about the system and doing nothing, I joined the system so I could influence those 25... READ MORE

Rosary With The Pope

Students from eight countries in Africa joined students in Rome by satellite for a rosary with the Pope last week.

The occasion was prayer for the Synod of Bishops for Africa, now underway. Here’s a short news clip about the event.

While the link lasts, you can watch video of this international rosary and pray along by following this link to the Vatican site, then pressing the “Rosary with university students” button.

President's Speech: Did Your Kids Watch?

What's your take on today's Presidential address to students?

As students around the country return to the classroom today after a long weekend or an even longer summer, controversy seems to be flaring nationwide over President Obama’s message to America’s students.  Over at Whitehouse.gov, you will be able to find a variety of resources related to the speech, including video for those who did not view the event live.

I’m curious to know if your children watched... READ MORE
