Sensible Style and Fit That Flatters

Fashion Friday vol. 3
Flutter Tie-front Cardigan, Christa Taylor

I’ve spent a fair amount of time exploring the wonderful world of modest fashion over the last year or so and have been delighted to see the quick pace at which it has grown.

This is thanks in large part to an adventurous group of young women who noticed there was a void in the fashion industry and set out to fill it. They recognized that more and more women were pining for clothing that was not... READ MORE

Jeans for Teens

Helping our daughters find the balance between modesty and style

A couple of weeks ago, I took my 14-year-old daughter shopping for jeans.

She’s short like I am and except for the waist (Be quiet about that—who asked you?!) we can wear the same sizes. But she rolled her eyes when I tried to steer her toward the stores and departments where I usually shop.

“I don’t want to look like a mom!”

Ouch.

But not really. I think it’s entirely appropriate for her to want... READ MORE

Fall Fashion Trends: The Good, The Bad, The Ugly

Fashion Friday vol. 1

Hello, ladies! I’m delighted to be joining you for Faith and Family Live‘s new Fashion Friday feature!

To start things off with a bang, I thought it might be entertaining to discuss the good, the bad and the ugly of 2009’s Fall Fashion Trends (according to Glamour magazine).

Here’s a glimpse into what you may soon be seeing in a store near you, along with a bit of commentary from yours truly. (I... READ MORE

Fashion Blogging Comes to Faith & Family

Welcome, Hallie Lord!

I’m so excited!

The lovely, the gracious, the talented Hallie Lord—known to her cyber fans as Betty Beguiles—has agreed to do a bit of fashion blogging here with us at Faith & Family. She’ll be doing a weekly blog feature we’re calling Fashion Friday, in which she’ll review trends, share styling tips, and discuss all things fashion—all from a cute, cool, modesty-minded Catholic woman’s point of view.

Look for Hallie’s first installment sometime tomorrow and please join me in a great big “Hooray!” for Fashion Friday.

Welcome, Hallie!

Looking Good

On building a wardrobe

I absolutely loved today’s feature article from Hallie Lord, which beautifully summed up the approach I have long tried to take with my own wardrobe (sometimes to better avail than others).

If you haven’t read the article, go check it out! I’ll wait…

So, as someone who really does try to abide by the rules/tact taken by Hallie, I want to reiterate what she’s said—those rules work! I have minimalist... READ MORE

Beyond Hemlines

Do we really understand modesty?
Bouguereau

A friend posted Don’t Wear That Mini to Mass on her Facebook page this morning.

It makes the case for appropriate dress at Mass in light-hearted fashion and I agree with it wholeheartedly.

However, happy as I am to see the flowering of articles and worthy apostolates attempting to reclaim some ground from the culture in the field of fashion, I wonder if part of the difficulty we have inculcating... READ MORE
