A Summer Treat When Summer's Over
Posted by Arwen Mosher in Food on Tuesday, October 11, 2011
We’re enjoying a short flashback here (high of 78 today!) but by the calendar, summer is over.
Every year I’m saddened to realize that, yet again, I didn’t get a chance to make s’mores. (We have a gas grill, so it’s harder than when I was a kid and the embers in our charcoal grill pretty much commanded us to roast marshmallows over them.)
S’mores are delicious. Their season is short. I should take... READ MORE
As Corny As ...
Posted by DariaSockey in Food on Wednesday, July 20, 2011
As corny as ... Kansas in August? How about as Pennsylvania in July?
Year ago, when I was a child, we had to wait until August for decent corn on the cob, since that was when local corn came ripe in my home state.
But over the years, earlier ripening varieties have been developed. In addition, newer types of corn holds their sugar content longer than formerly, so even the out of state stuff we’ve... READ MORE
Inner Peace

Right now, it’s crazy loud in my house. I turned on an after-dinner movie, hoping to settle the scene. It’s not working.
In the front room, two of the boys just finished an obstacle course that involved playing leap frog with my leather ottoman’s. There are dress-up’s strewn throughout the kitchen, someone is asking for a snack even though dinner ended ten minutes prior.
Cue toddler crying, wanting... READ MORE
What Do You Put In These Things?
Posted by DariaSockey in Food on Wednesday, July 06, 2011
After putting on a very satisfactory July 4th barbecue, with leftovers to last much of the week, I’m really not feeling the need to try new recipes.
But here is something simple that might help some of us moms this summer ...
On my next trip to the dollar store, I’m going to pick up some popsicle molds and start experimenting. Back when all seven kids were at home, these molds were essential equipment. ... READ MORE
Mom, I'm Bored!
Posted by Rachel Balducci in Family on Thursday, June 30, 2011
Let’s have a little contest called “Mothers Helping Mothers.”
It goes like this. I say, “Mom I’m Bored,” and you give one or two of your favorite responses to that statement.
Of course, practically speaking I think it’s up to the child to figure out how to entertain himself. As my mother always told us, “I’m not a cruise director!” Kids are smart. They can find things to do.
But it’s also nice, at... READ MORE
Finding Motivation and Books

This week on the Faith & Family Live Cast (click here to listen or click on the player above), Lynn, Hallie and I take a break from the summer heat to enjoy a fun conversation about staying “motivated” during the summer, when all we really feel like doing is sipping a cool drink and taking a nap! Are you feeling lazy and lax this summer? How do you motivate yourself to stay on top of teaching kids,... READ MORE

Fun in a Basket

Summer time is picnic time, and not just the kind where you throw some sandwiches and drink boxes in a bag for an afternoon at the local park.
It’s also time for potluck picnics at Church, or family reunions, or block parties. The kind where someone says, “Are you bringing that special pasta salad or yours?” or maybe, “I hope you’re making your famous baked beans again—no one else’s tastes as good as yours.” Or perhaps, “if you’re bringing your lemon pie, I’ll be first in line to grab some before it’s all gone.”
Do you have a special picnic food that goes fast at summer gatherings? A super salad? A mouth-watering main course? A savory side dish? A delectable dessert?
If you are willing to share the secret formula for your wonderful creation, please do so in comments!
Caramelized Onions
Posted by Rachel Balducci in Family on Tuesday, June 14, 2011
Yesterday I was craving home-grilled hamburgers with homegrown tomatoes and caramelized onions. The problem was I have never really mastered the task of actually caramelizing anything. Usually when I try working with onions, they wind up sauteed. Not quite the same thing.
I leafed through one of my Barefoot Contessa cookbooks and she had a recipe for fancy grilled burgers with caramelized onions.... READ MORE
Summer Enrichment Rant

Ok folks, prepare for a rant. If you’re in a good, sunny disposition, consider hitting “pause” on this post and stepping outside with a glass of lemonade…
Now that you’ve been warned, I’m going to unload a bit of my current state of maternal frustration. I just returned home from spending four hours with my “baby”, a highschooler entering his Junior year next fall, at our local community college.... READ MORE
