Brunch Inspiration

please share some!

One of the most challenging aspects of going to early Mass every Sunday is how utterly starving we all are once we’re done. No one (especially me!) ever wants to go home to cook because we are ready to eat right then, as soon as we get in the van.

The thought of having to pull out ingredients and cook something seems like more than anyone can take. And while I don’t really mind going out to eat, I... READ MORE

Do You Fast On Sunday?

Sundays are part of Lent

I don’t know why memories of my first years as a Catholic keep coming to me this year, but I recall taking my first Lent very seriously.

I fasted completely (water and black coffee alone) on Ash Wednesday and the Fridays of Lent, took on several other challenging disciplines, and considered people who took Sundays off to be wimping out.

This was the zeal of a convert and the metabolism of youth.... READ MORE

Purple and Pink

Don't forget!

If you’re like me, buying Advent candles is on your To Do list for… Saturday.

This year I’m feeling rather proud because I have been thinking about getting my candles for almost an entire week. Now I just need to make sure the thinking and the getting connect so we can be ready for Advent this Sunday.

Are you ready to go? I hope so!

On Top of Spaghetti

My quest for the perfect meatball

Last week I shared my weekly tradition of hosting Sunday dinner for the family. My hope is to share my Sunday dinner plans and gain some encouragement and ideas from the pros (you).

Most of the recipes that I make are the meals that I grew up eating. Every summer our Aunt Jane would invite our family down to the shore for an afternoon swim and then dinner. After our fun in the sun our entire family... READ MORE

Preparing Sunday Night Dinner

What's cooking in my kitchen

Every Sunday I make dinner for my family. The tradition started a couple of summers ago when I bought a new grill. I had everyone over for hamburgers and hot dogs and my Dad joked, “same time next week?”

Now, every Sunday at 6:30 I host dinner for my parents, brother, cousins, sisters, brothers-in-law, and all the kids.

Grocery shopping to feed the family is a challenge for me, since I’m used to... READ MORE

Priesthood Sunday

Have you thanked your priest lately?

Sunday, October 25 marks Priesthood Sunday. On this day, Catholics across the country are encouraged to do something special for their priest to show their gratitude for his leadership and service to the Church.

Some ideas include: saying a rosary for your priest; baking something as a gift for your priest; or even just taking the time after Mass to tell your priest how much you appreciate his yes... READ MORE

'Follow Me'

from today's Gospel

Jesus said to them, “The cup that I drink, you will drink, and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized; but to sit at my right or at my left is not mine to give but is for those for whom it has been prepared.”
—Mark 10:39-40

Lord, give us strength to follow you. Help us to love as You love.

Baptism of the Lord

from today's Gospel

And when he came up out of the water, immediately he saw the heavens opened and the Spirit descending upon him like a dove; and a voice came from heaven, “Thou art my beloved Son; with thee I am well pleased.”
—Mark 1:10-11

Sunday Night

and what it sometimes looks like
http://news.bbc.co.uk/media/images/39117000/jpg/_39117470_moya_afp300x300.jpg

Sometimes, at the end of a long, fun weekend, I can tell when I’ve had too much.

Most Sunday evenings we are putting things back in order for the new week, dealing with taking showers and making lunches and picking up the house. There are moments in the midst of this when I start to get worn out. I begin to feel overworked and overtired and I try hard to push through as best as I can.

But some nights, I reach my limit.

Tonight, I bent down to pick up an errant wooden spoon. While still hunched over, I tossed the spoon in the direction of the kitchen and it just barely nicked the edge of the doorway, spiraling the object directly back at me. I felt exactly like that guy up above there.

That was it. I realized, when I felt my insides wanting to implode—yup, time to chill out. Some of the details, I am finally learning, really can wait until tomorrow.
