Chauffeur Laid Off
Mom desperately seeking job security
Posted by Lisa Hendey in Family on Monday, June 30, 2008
I was recently laid off from a job I’ve held since September, 1991 when my employer announced that he was no longer in need of my services. The position in question – chauffeur for my eldest son, Eric.
I can’t complain that my lay off came as a surprise, but I’m still feeling the pain associated with giving up a role that has been integral to my identity for over sixteen years. Eric, you... READ MORE
Traveling with Tots and Teens

News of this story hit the headlines this week in advance of our family vacation involving airline travel. The title “Noisy Kids Get Family Kicked Off Flight” grabbed my attention - I’ve had more than my fair share of flights as the mom with the noisy kids! Blessedly, we’ve never been kicked off a flight, but we have has a few moments where I felt like climbing into the overhead bin for the duration... READ MORE

Refrigerator raids, loud mu sic, and a lot of horsing around may not sound like fun to you, but to your kids and their friends it’s heaven on earth. Yes, kids — especially teens — can be loud, expensive, and at times, can rattle your nerves, but the time, money, and energy you spend on them now is a wise investment, paying lasting dividends.
Studies and statistics show that teens without a healthy... READ MORE
Teen Faith Resource Guide
Posted by Tim Drake in Features on Friday, July 11, 2008
With our eldest child on the verge of his teen years, I’ve often wondered what materials are out there to help guide my children through this volatile time in their lives. I was pleasantly surprised to find a vast variety of resources available to help teens retain and grow in their Catholic faith — and maybe even discern a vocation to the priesthood or religious life.
Apologetics
Beginning Catholic... READ MORE
The Cutest Age

“What a cute baby. Too bad they have to grow up!”
I’ve heard that more than once from strangers and assumed it was just another one of those worn-out lines about the evils of raising kids. You know — small and cute like a puppy that you can hold in your arms and pet. But watch out! Someday you won’t be able to control it with a choke chain and leash, even if it is wearing one as a fashion statement.... READ MORE

Little Ones (ages 0-7)
Friends in High Places
If your children like praise and worship music, I can’t recommend this CD highly enough. It’s the best Catholic kids worship album I’ve heard, and it includes both familiar and original songs. With inspiring vocals and rousing instrumentals by Christ Music Kids, it will energize your entire family. The album would make the perfect accompaniment to a Vacation... READ MORE

Compass Points to Christ
Luke Zumo, Loyola University
Growing up in a Catholic family, Luke Zumo was already involved with his faith before college. As a senior at Catholic High School in Baton Rouge, La., he was a student minister, mentoring a small group of freshmen by learning and applying virtues and Gospel values.
But adjusting to classes, basketball, and campus life in his freshman year at... READ MORE
Raising Sowers

But the seed sown on rich soil
is the one who hears the word and understands it,
who indeed bears fruit and yields a hundred or sixty or thirtyfold.
The timing wasn’t intentional, but couldn’t have been more fortuitous - about two weeks ago, my eldest son came out to the kitchen and said, “Mom, can I plant my own garden?” Eric is almost seventeen, so his request for a garden wasn’t what I was... READ MORE
Extraordinary Sauce for Ordinary Time

Ironically, even though I’m a bad and quite disinterested cook, both of my teenage sons have a growing interest in culinary arts. Eric, the almost 17 year old, harvested his first round of fresh basil this week from our new garden. It gave us the perfect opportunity to try out a recipe from Fr. Leo Patalinghug and Grace Before Meals.
In conjunction with SQPN, Fr. Leo recently created a series... READ MORE
Trash or Treasure?

My mother in law lives next to the dumpster in an apartment community that is prone to frequent moves. She has lived there for several years - I know the owners love her because she takes such pride in her home and keeps the outside areas around her looking great, even going so far as to help with the landscaping. Since people are moving in and out so frequently, they often leave large, usable items... READ MORE
