Taking a Mini Pilgrimage
Posted by Lisa Hendey in Faith on Friday, August 01, 2008
Whenever I travel, I love to visit local area churches, cathedrals and shrines. My parents passed along this gift to their five children - many of our family vacations growing up were camping trips to the various California missions. So now, when I travel, I always make time for at least one new church experience. Instead of collecting postcards or magnets, I have a collection of photos of Mary... READ MORE
Teens Helping Teens

Homeschooling mom and noted author Maureen Wittmann shared with me the exciting news that this week she is launching a great new blog aimed at helping the wonderful teens in our lives. The blog, entitled “No Question Left Behind: Teens Helping Teens” is a question and answer format that helps teens find answers to questions about themselves, their friends, the world and our church. It looks to be... READ MORE
The View from My “Office” This Morning
Posted by Lisa Hendey in Family on Friday, August 08, 2008
Once again, the old age question begs to be asked - “Is it ‘camping’ if you have a wifi connection?” This is the view this morning from my “office” - a lawn chair perched along this cliff in Pacifica at the backside of our 28 foot trailer. The only sounds around me are the waves crashing and the gulls loudly calling to one another. A fine mist covers everything, but I’m warm in front of a toasty... READ MORE
All that Jazz
Posted by Lisa Hendey in Family on Saturday, August 09, 2008
Last night found our camping quartet huddled around sushi and soda at a San Francisco area jazz club. Since all three of my guys are musicians, this was their equivalent to many families’ outings to a major league ballpark – a chance to see the pros doing what they love to do. Eric is hoping to play in the jazz band at school this year. Adam, our budding drummer, had his eye on the percussionist... READ MORE
Easing into Reality

Having returned home from our “last hurrah” camping trip, I confronted the disquieting fact that for one of my kids school starts in six days. I’m not one of those moms who parties on the first day of school at the thought of freedom and a return to scheduled life. Rather, I’m the mom who sits in the parking lot crying and missing my kids until I arrive early to pick them up and whisk them back... READ MORE
Fire Extinguisher Safety
Posted by Lisa Hendey in Homemaking on Monday, August 18, 2008
Last week, at our Parish Staff Meeting, we had the opportunity to play fireman. The expiration dates were up on some of the office fire extinguishers, so our head of maintenance took the opportunity to bring in a fire safety consultant to do an inservice on fire extinguishers. I have low “meeting tolerance” so I thought it was going to be boring, but I actually learned a great deal. Best of all,... READ MORE

St. Killian’s, Christendom
Kaylie Miller
When she was 15 years old, Kaylie Miller made a promise to herself: She would not attend a Catholic college. But her resolve faded when she visited the campus of Christendom College in Front Royal, Va.
“I fell in love with the place,” recalls Kaylie, now 24. “I had a meeting with Dr. [Timothy] O’Donnell, president of the college, and he half-jokingly... READ MORE

Prayer Warriors
Can a family ever have too many Catholic prayer books around the home? This concise book of prayers not only teaches families what to pray, but how to pray. It offers friendly introductions to the Church’s traditional prayers, with sections on Ignatian prayer, the Luminous Mysteries of the Rosary, the order of the Mass, mealtime and bedtime prayers,... What’s in a Name?
Posted by Lisa Hendey in Faith on Tuesday, August 26, 2008
My almost-seventeen year old Eric had his first meeting for the second year of his Confirmation program on Sunday night. As we parents reviewed Safe Environment policies with the Youth Minister, the teens met to discuss the process of choosing a Confirmation name. They will be confirmed in January, so the discernment process begins now as they consider their potential patrons.
Driving home with... READ MORE
Lunch Box Blues

I knew it was inevitable…
Adam took off for his first full day of eighth grade this morning with his lunch in tow, nondescriptly tucked into a brown paper bag. His trusty insulated lunchbox and cool reusable containers tossed aside in favor of something more socially acceptable.
I shouldn’t have been surprised! I remember Eric making the transition from box to bag back when he was in junior... READ MORE
