Small Acts for God

He Does Big Things With A Little Yes

My friend Heather and I are involved in a ministry called Theology on Tap. The basic idea of Theology on Tap is creating a forum where young people of all walks of life could talk about the faith in a casual setting at a bar or restaurant. A typical Theology on Tap consists of a 45 minute talk, 15 minutes q&a and time for fellowship afterward.

This forum opens the door to young people who wouldn’t... READ MORE

The Bunny's Angel

The joy of teaching kids about God

When I decided to major in theology in college, one of the reasons I did it was so that when my future children asked the hard questions, I’d be able to answer some of them.

I pictured solemn dinner table discussions about topics like Purgatory and the Beatific Vision. My kids would know exactly what “Oh happy fault!” means, and the difference between plenary and partial indulgences. I could teach... READ MORE

Kids and the Big Questions

Mama, where was I before I was?

My daughter loves to look at our wedding pictures, at Mama and Daddy all dressed up. She likes to talk about our wedding, too, and I tell her all the details she wants.

She did surprise me one day, though. “Mama, remember when you and Daddy got married? And I was there?”

“Sweetheart, you weren’t.”

(In a sense she was, but I don’t think “twinkle in your father’s eye” is a concept she’s ready for yet.)... READ MORE

Modern Day Evangelist

How do I say that in a tweet?

Currently I am preparing for the comprehensive exams for my master’s degree in dogmatic theology at Holy Apostles College. Luckily one of my friends (from Christendom College) is a professor at Holy Apostles and he agreed to meet with me weekly to go over the material.

We are poring over topics such as, human happiness, the ethics of marriage, sin, and even human freedom. You’d think with all this... READ MORE

Students Hungry for the Truth

and other lessons from theology bloopers

Tom Beaudoin gathered this collection of theology bloopers from undergrads at three colleges.

Here’s one:

“After reading Martin Luther, I am thinking of becoming protest. Protestant theology teaches “faith alone,” also known as ‘sola fillet’ or ‘sola feta.’”

Never write essays on an empty stomach might be the lesson there.

Though I’d like to think there really was such a thing as “dessert asceticism.”

The Church’s Constant Teaching

Catholic doctrine on the subject of abortion has never wavered

You probably caught the recent incident where Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, a self-professed Catholic, told an interviewer she can’t say for sure when life begins, and also mentioned that the Catholic Church does not have a historically consistent teaching on the topic.

If you missed the incident, you can catch fellow Faith & Family Live! blogger Rebecca Teti’s coverage here and here.

Needless... READ MORE
