There and Back Again

Have you ever noticed that the leg home from a trip always seems quicker? That’s been my experience. My husband and I were just discussing this on our way home from our recent epic cross-country vacation that involved planes, vans and a 3 a.m. arrival back home.

Our two-year-old is talking like crazy these days - complete, complex sentences - but if you visited us and met him, you’d never know it. He clams right up when a stranger is in the room.
Do your kids do this? I first noticed the phenomenon when my daughter was a toddler. She was a chatterbox at home, but never said a word in public or at friends’ houses.

I think I’ve mentioned before that I come from a nerdy family. We like language. We do not say “decimate” when we mean “annihilate” and we do not say that things make us “nauseous.” If one of us uses the word “myself” when he should use “I” or “me,” he’s sure to get the evil eye from at least one other family member.
