Getting You All to Themselves

One-on-one time with kids?

This past weekend, visiting my parents, Bryan and I planned to take advantage of their generosity and leave our kids with them while we went out to lunch.

It didn’t work out that way, because at the last minute Camilla said, “Can I come too?” We love that little curly-headed monkey, and we couldn’t say no. So we took her along on our date.

When we got to the restaurant and were going through the usual... READ MORE

This Domestic Church

The little things lead us to heaven

One recent afternoon, Henry was walking around the house with a toxic diaper. Wherever he went, he tortured whatever brother was in his path.

Finally, enough time had gone by.

“Henry smells horrible,” I declared, “Let’s get him a clean diaper.”

“Mom,” swooned seven-year-old Augie, “you are a saint.”

Thank you, my son. Thank you for noticing.

Time Alone Is Precious

Other things are even more so

Being a mother of little ones is strange.  I often have no idea what day it is, but I can tell you almost to the minute how long it’s been since the last nap or the most recent potty break, and exactly how many hours there are between now and bedtime.

I rarely consult my calendar, but I live my life by the clock.

This morning, with my sister babysitting, I got to leave the house for some precious... READ MORE

I Need a Cupcake

After an hour at my house, you will too

This morning I was supposed to get work done. This was why my supportive and encouraging husband offered to bring our daughter to the library for her volunteer hours. This was why he was designated bank-go-er.

So how to explain to him that the last hour has seen me accomplish NO WORK whatsoever? Well, at least not the kind of work I was supposed to be doing here on this computer.

Here’s what I did... READ MORE

Wake Up Call

Sometimes God gets my attention the only way He can

Do you ever get the feeling God is trying to get your attention?

I got that feeling yesterday afternoon. Right about the time I found myself lying face down on my kitchen tiles, gasping in pain.

I had been rushing again.

I think God does not like it when I rush too much. It’s a very bad habit of mine to attempt to cram too much activity, too much thought, too much stuff into my too short days and... READ MORE

Little Days

Making time for recovery

Today I got very little accomplished.  Today, I am okay with that.

I have an ongoing mental list of things to get done around the house.  On any given day, I’ve got a rough idea of the tasks that need to be accomplished that day, and I feel good if I’ve checked them all off by evening.

Since the master list of tasks is endless (I’m sure anyone out there who’s ever been in charge of running a household... READ MORE

Late for Mass?

No you won’t be! Because Faith & Family Live! remembered to remind you: Daylight Savings Time begins tonight.

Set your clocks ahead one hour at 2:00 am on Sunday March 8.

Or just do it before you go to bed tonight. I won’t tell.

Dads and Diapers

This will brighten your day

I’m sure this has been around for a while, but I just saw it for the first time and laughed so hard I had to share.

Investing in Our Marriage

What do you need to keep yours healthy?

One of the best things my husband and I do for our marriage is put our daughter to bed every night.

I know many couples swear by a regular date night, where they can get out of the house and be just the two of them again.  Bryan and I do occasionally leave Camilla and go out for dinner, but for the most part we prefer the privacy and comfort of our own home.

Night after night we put Camilla to bed... READ MORE

Little Time

Children grow up fast

Lisa’s post about her son hitting a milestone has me pondering the rapidity with which children grow up.  It’s a cliche, I know, but when our daughter Camilla was a newborn, so fussy that every week felt like it had at least twelve days and twelve endless nights in it, we had trouble with the idea that children grow up fast.  One time when we were in the middle of a many-hour cry-fest, my husband...
