Hello, Dolly!

a blast from the past

At the store recently, I grabbed a birthday gift for a niece—a tiny little Strawberry Shortcake doll.

I had these same dolls as a girl and when I sniffed the plastic case, a wave of memories washed over me. My sister and I had a nice little collection of “Strawberry Shortcakes,” and I remember my favorite being the Angel Food doll with her white hair and fresh scent.

I’m looking forward to more of... READ MORE

Hypercharge with Skyball

A cool toy for grown ups too!

Today, I took an impromptu trip to Target with a friend and found myself in the toy section. That’s not someplace I hang out much lately, so I’m not up to date on all of the latest toy crazes.  While waiting for her to browse, I picked up a Skyball which is reputed to be the “highest bouncing ball ever made”.  Well, needless to say, the blue Skyball was so addictive that it made its way into my cart... A Happy Bargain

My daughter's great (and cheap) new toy

My husband called this afternoon and told me that he was going to come home from work early, trade his car for my bigger one, and go out and pick up a surprise.

“A surprise?” I asked, thinking quickly about what large items could be exciting for me.

But the surprise wasn’t for me, he told me. It was for Camilla.

Ah! That explained his gleeful tone - my husband loves to delight his little girl.

Camilla... READ MORE

Tackling Toy Turmoil

How do you deal with the mess?

I feel blessed because in our current house with our current sleeping situation, we’re able to have a play room.

It’s great having a room that’s completely dedicated to housing the toys. It makes tidying up easy, as I can just toss toys in there as I find them.

But I’m telling you, that room is a pit. Most of the time, it’s nearly impossible to walk across it without maiming yourself on a small piece... READ MORE

Bubbles for Babes

How spending a few bucks has made my summer easier

When my kids are in my hair and I want them out of it, I’ve got a great solution.

“Hey kids!” I say. “Want to go outside and blow bubbles?”

They always say yes, so I send them out on the back deck and they play with their bubbles. Often they stay out there for most of an hour.

“But wait!” I can hear you protesting. “How can you let a one-year-old and a three-year-old play with bubbles by themselves?... READ MORE

Chummy

“It’s a sleeping bag! It’s a stuffed toy! IT’S A SHARK!” reads the promo material.

Here’s a product designed, in the words of its creator, “to make [misunderstood] sharks more cuddly.”

Not sure reminding us that they’ll eat us is the way, but it made me laugh.

If it cost about $30, I would be tempted to buy this fine item for my niece and nephews—not really for them, but to horrify my brother-in-law.

But at $200, I find I can resist.

Lovin' Laundry

Maybe we can foster the love

Ladies, I have proof that laundry can be fun!

Today as I was searching for a laundry rack on-line, I came across this sweet little toy—the Playmobile Laundry Room. I have never seen anything like it.

I’ve really been pondering this toy laundry room a lot this afternoon and I’m wondering—do you think having such a laundry room as a normal part of a child’s toy chest might make laundry more fun for that person when they grow up? Kinda like all the people who love to cook, and all the toy kitchens that little kids like to play with.

Hmmmmm. It’s a long shot—but for all the people who loath laundry, it just might be worth the effort.

What the Boy is Playing Today

What Made the Birthday Boy Happy

a wooden tool kit for a little carpenters

Phew!

We Beans end every summer with a slew of birthdays, but Daniel’s 3rd birthday last week marked the end of our celebrating until November.

One of the gifts we gave to Daniel was such a success that I thought I’d share it with you here: It was the Melissa & Doug Wooden Take-Along 24-piece Tool Kit.

This is the second one of these sets we’ve bought (the last one was many years ago and the pieces... READ MORE
