Are We There YET?

A Real-Life Guide to Real Family Road Trips

A friend of mine recently confided in me that she felt completely overwhelmed by the thought of an upcoming family vacation with her small children.

It would be a beach vacation, she told me, and she predicted that her days would consist of packing up the little ones, trekking them to the beach, and counting heads while they were there. All day, every day, she would fight sunburn, bug bites, trips... READ MORE

Traveling with Tots and Teens

Plan ahead to make traveling with children a more comfortable experience for everyone.

News of this story hit the headlines this week in advance of our family vacation involving airline travel.  The title “Noisy Kids Get Family Kicked Off Flight” grabbed my attention - I’ve had more than my fair share of flights as the mom with the noisy kids!  Blessedly, we’ve never been kicked off a flight, but we have has a few moments where I felt like climbing into the overhead bin for the duration... Taking a Mini Pilgrimage

Turn any trip into a faith filled experience

Whenever I travel, I love to visit local area churches, cathedrals and shrines.  My parents passed along this gift to their five children - many of our family vacations growing up were camping trips to the various California missions.  So now, when I travel, I always make time for at least one new church experience.  Instead of collecting postcards or magnets, I have a collection of photos of Mary... The View from My “Office” This Morning

"Camping" comes in many styles

Once again, the old age question begs to be asked - “Is it ‘camping’ if you have a wifi connection?” This is the view this morning from my “office” - a lawn chair perched along this cliff in Pacifica at the backside of our 28 foot trailer.  The only sounds around me are the waves crashing and the gulls loudly calling to one another.  A fine mist covers everything, but I’m warm in front of a toasty... Visiting Bliss

Relative help makes parenting a breeze

My husband and I grew up in the same hometown, about ninety miles from where we live now, and both sets of our parents still live there.  Consequently we visit often - we’re here this weekend, actually - and every time we’re here I am reminded how relaxing it can be to visit relatives.

When Camilla was an infant she was quite fussy, and we were in our hometown quite a bit during her early months... READ MORE

To Grandmother’s House We Go

We're packed ... and ready for anything.

3-year-old Raphael is going to spend two days and one night at his grandmother’s house. The boy is beyond excited about this. In fact, it is all he has been talking about since we made the mistake of telling him it was going to happen almost two weeks ago.

“Is it today?” he asks me every morning. “Is today the day we go to Grandmaman’s house?”

“Not today, sweetie. I will be sure to tell you when... READ MORE

On the Road

Enjoying the land away from home

I love being near the water.  I grew up in a town on the edge of one of the Great Lakes, and I think there is nothing like it.

If you’ve never seen a Great Lake, they truly are Great.  From the shore, one of them looks pretty much like an ocean, and I love to sit and look out over the huge, calm expanse of water.

Currently Bryan, Camilla, and I are on vacation in Pennsylvania, visiting my uncle... READ MORE

His Path

Exploring colleges with a teenager is exciting and emotional.

For the past few days, I’ve been traveling in the Midwest, visiting with my family in Chicago and taking in the Notre Dame vs. Stanford football game. I thought I’d take the next few days to share a few reflections with you from these adventures.

One of the primary purposes for the trip was to begin the process of looking at colleges with our 17 year old Junior, Eric.  And what greater place to... READ MORE

The Scene of the Sacrament

A return to the site of our wedding brings back happy memories.

Part of the joy of visiting Notre Dame this weekend was visiting the Basilica of the Sacred Heart at the University.

On May 31, 1986, I walked down the aisle of this magnificent church, escorted by my parents on either side, and married the love of my life.  The Basilica is the church every bride dreams of for her wedding.  Stunningly beautiful, the Basilica is the spiritual center of the campus... READ MORE

Tending Toddlers

The joy of keeping toddlers entertained can wear you out!

This weekend at the Notre Dame football game, I took a stroll down memory lane.

In attendance with our family at the game were my sister Erin, her husband David, and my two nephews Evan (4) and Tyler (2).  Erin’s boys are angels, practically perfect in every way!  In addition, they are “all boy” like mine were - which translates into constant busyness and lots of physicality.

I’ve forgotten the... READ MORE
