Cinnamon Bun Joy

indulge yourself!

The Pioneer Woman has hers. Many other people have theirs. All get rave reviews from various quarters. And I have a recipe too. I didn’t, like, INVENT it. But I tweaked it to (what I consider to be) perfection, so I thought I’d share.

Cinnamon rolls. Yum! It’s Easter, isn’t it? The season of rejoicing is a great time to make these babies.

I like to make them for Sunday breakfast, because I can do... READ MORE

A Summer Treat When Summer's Over

Indoor s'mores are delicious

We’re enjoying a short flashback here (high of 78 today!) but by the calendar, summer is over.

Every year I’m saddened to realize that, yet again, I didn’t get a chance to make s’mores. (We have a gas grill, so it’s harder than when I was a kid and the embers in our charcoal grill pretty much commanded us to roast marshmallows over them.)

S’mores are delicious. Their season is short. I should take... READ MORE

What Do You Put In These Things?

Culinary Wednesday

After putting on a very satisfactory July 4th barbecue, with leftovers to last much of the week, I’m really not feeling the need to try new recipes.

But here is something simple that might help some of us moms this summer ...

On my next trip to the dollar store, I’m going to pick up some popsicle molds and start experimenting. Back when all seven kids were at home, these molds were essential equipment. ... READ MORE

Easter Egg Sweetness

a cute idea!

Here’s a clever idea for Easter—sweet little eggs filled with a message!

I love the idea of putting inside the egg a note of encouragement, or maybe even a scripture. I know some families who hide the Easter baskets for the children to find—maybe these eggs could hold little clues!

(As an aside, I know we are still in the season of Lent and here I am posting about celebratory treats again, but I... READ MORE

Donut, Cake, or Something Else?

What's your Fat Tuesday treat of choice?

I’ve got one item on my to-do list before bed tonight: mix up the dough for tomorrow’s faschnachts. Faschnachts are a tradition in my family, from my mother’s German heritage. Every year on Fat Tuesday, she’d fry up a big batch and we’d rush home from school to get some, excited for one last indulgence before Lent.

In the area where I grew up, there are many more people with Polish heritage than German,... READ MORE

Let's Talk About the Candy

What's your favorite?

Happy Easter!

Now that the long season of Lent is finally over, can we talk about something important? Like ... Easter candy? You know your house is full of it.

After reading about all the fun and creative things readers here do for their families at Easter, I am eager to know this too: What’s your favorite candy? What treats were a hit this year with you and your family?

I’ve blogged before about... READ MORE

Cookie Eggs

Can’t get enough egg decorating?

Here’s yet another form, with step-by-step instructions.

Special Crispy Treats

An upgraded version of a classic

I know they’re not everyone’s thing, but I love rice crispy treats. Yes, they’re basically just cereal-studded pieces of chewy sugar, but they are *delicious* cereal-studded balls of chewy sugar. Also, as long as you work fast and you’re not picky about letting them cool completely, you can be eating them less than fifteen minutes after you decide to make them.

And if there are children out there... READ MORE

Confection Affections

What's going on in your kitchen?

Have you begun your Christmas baking yet?

I have done ... exactly none so far.

This is not like me. I usually enjoy spending my Advent filling my freezer with a beautiful assortment of special cookies and candies for Christmas gifts and entertaining.

But I’m always lecturing other moms about accepting their season in life and I suppose it’s time I took my own advice.

Right now my motherhood seems... READ MORE

Toast Those Oats!

for even more delicious cookies

Something about this time of year makes me want to bake cookies.

(Until a few weeks from now, anyway, when we go apple picking and I start wanting to bake apple crisp!)

I like oatmeal cookies because the oats give them a more substance than chocolate chip or sugar cookies, and I enjoy them even more with dried fruit and nuts in them.  It’s almost like eating sweetened granola in the form of a disc... READ MORE
