Reptile, Sand and Sea

I can’t resist sharing this photo from our family trip to the ocean last week.

Other kids swam, collected shells, and hunted crabs and baby lobsters. But on this particular day, 14-year-old Eamon was single-minded. He was creating a sea turtle.

Life lately has felt a bit overwhelming, with various home projects, work projects, and the rush to prepare for a new school year. But when I look at this photo, I am reminded to give thanks to God for simple pleasures, for days at the beach, for the sound of the waves, for 14-year-old boys, and the simplicity of sand.

Re-Entry

post-vacation blues

We arrived home last night after being gone for over a week. Part of the time was spent at the Catholic New Media Celebration and the rest was our family seeing the sights of Washington, D.C. and then Boston.

We had a wonderful time.

Today we are back to reality—there are meals to cook and beds to make, and no hotel staff coming in to change sheets and vacuum the floors. I’m always surprised at how... READ MORE

School of Nursing

Here, there, everywhere

This week is World Wide Nursing Week and in honor of that I have been nursing the baby all over kingdom come.

I did not set out to make any kind of statement, but we are on vacation with a four-month-old and so I am feeding her when she’s hungry, wherever that happens to be. So far I’ve nursed Isabel: at a rest stop in the Blue Ridge Parkway; on the DC Metro; at the Smithsonian (twice); at a Wendy’s... READ MORE

Hanging Summer Hopes & Dreams

an easy way to communicate and motivate this summer

What are your family’s hopes and dreams for together time this summer?

Lisa’s recent post about scheduling summer got me thinking about the kinds of activities I hope to fill our summer days with this year.

Then this post at Teach Mama really inspired me. Shouldn’t every family member—even the smallest ones—have a say in our how your family spends its time this summer?

It’s a good idea to have personal... READ MORE

Casual Fridays - School's Out, Work's In

How do you handle school vacations when you're a working parent?

In a few weeks, Spring break will be upon us.  For many lucky families, this means a trip to someplace fun or a much needed break.  But for some working parents, school vacation can cause major logistical issues if the kids are out of school but mom and dad still have to be at work.

In my community, some businesses have begun to think creatively about providing solutions for those caught up in this... READ MORE

Resuming Routines, Grinding Gears

How's your transition going?

Have you ever learned to drive a standard transmission? You know that horrible grating, grinding sound the gears make when you shift them incorrectly? I think I heard that sound today.

It was coming from my brain.

Like many others today, I am doing my very best to make a smooth move from the relaxed holiday schedule we have enjoyed the past two weeks to one that brings all of us back to school, back... READ MORE

Fear & Fun

Behold, my children’s first experience with a roller coaster.

It’s the log flume at Wonderland in Ocean City, NJ, where we spent last week.

The terror in their faces here belies the fact they all begged to ride again afterwards.

The 5-yr-old, interestingly (I almost didn’t let him ride) was the most enthusiastic. “Mom! It’s really scary and then it’s fun!” he exulted.

That applies to almost everything, I find.

Good to the Last Drop?

Savoring the ends of things

My maternal grandfather passed away when I was eighteen.  I remember him as a sweet man who loved his grandchildren very much.

I also remember him as subdued, almost depressed, at least during the last few days of our semiannual visits to him and my grandmother, who lived a day’s drive away from us.

Recently my mother told me the reason for this.  “Granddaddy” loved so much having his only grandchildren... READ MORE

Great Grands

I’m posting this from Montgomery, Alabama, where I’ve been visiting my maternal grandmother.

After a pit stop in Atlanta to pick up two of four cousins located there, we headed even further into what I like to call “South” America.

(My road trips feel more exotic that way.)

This isn’t the most flattering photo of any of ‘em, but here’s my 93-yr-old Grandma with 6 of her 8 great-grand-kids. It’s... READ MORE

Summer Sabbatical

Renew, Reflect and Readjust - a Summer Break

Our God is a God of many surprises. I’ve been given the opportunity to take summer sabbatical. Yeah!  I think I need it.

I will return in the Fall - refreshed, renewed and ready to roll.

Blessings,
Sr. Patricia
