"Being Catholic means 'paying a price'"

a bishop speaks truth

“What we bring is not an onerous burden – we bring a liberation. And people may not know they do want this good news from Jesus but it really is what they’re looking for.”

That’s a quote from Archbishop Allen Vigneron of Detroit, interviewed during a recent visit to the Vatican. I’m proud that he’s local to here. He’s a great man, and it’s a great interview, full of truth.

Read the whole thing at the Catholic News Agency website - it’s well worth your time.

Vatican VBS

A new VBS for Catholic families and parishes

With “back to school” season upon us, it may seem like a funny time to be talking about Vacation Bible School. But the truth of the matter is that this is the time of the year where parishes and homeschool groups are making their curriculum decisions for NEXT summer! So I wanted to share with you the good news I received from Susan Lawson, marketing director at www.GrowingWithTheSaints.com. Susan... READ MORE

Savannah's New Bishop

Exciting news!

Like Philly, the Diocese of Savannah heard about our new bishop today—Franciscan Father Gregory J. Hartmayer, OFM, 59, of the Archdiocese of Atlanta.

I loved his honesty about his reaction to the news:

Hartmayer said he received a phone call on July 5 from an official at The Vatican with a heavy Italian accent.

“I understood some words I recognized like ‘Pope Benedict XVI’ and ‘Diocese of Savannah,’... READ MORE

Church News

Where do you turn for news and information?

The blogosphere is abuzz this afternoon with commentary and speculation about the appointment of a new Archbishop for Philadelphia. Because no official announcement has been made, I prefer to wait until we have news from the Vatican or the USCCB before engaging in a discussion about this appointment, which will truly be historic and important for the future of our Church in the US.

I’m pondering the... READ MORE

Watching Rome

Resources for the big event

Now that the Royal Wedding is over, who’s looking to Rome?

I certainly am, and I love that Lisa is praying for our Faith & Family community while she’s there. What a gift!

I read that more than 2 million people are expected to be visiting Rome this weekend for our late Holy Father’s beatification. I’m sure many, many more of us will be watching from afar.

To help us do that, the Vatican has resources on its website. Here is a calendar of events for the weekend. And for those of us who want to learn (or show our kids) more about the soon-to-be-Blessed John Paul II, this multimedia page, A Tribute to John Paul II, is loaded with information.

What to Pack?

What would you take to Rome?

OK friends, Rebecca shared the good news recently that I will be headed to the Vatican this weekend. This trip was a very big surprise and has been planned quite quickly with the help of many good friends. I am so excited that I will be able to share it with all of you via blog posts coming during the time I am in Italy.

But first, I have to get there. The trip is going to involve planes, trains and... READ MORE

Look Who's Talking To The Vatican!

The Vatican is hosting an international meeting of Catholic bloggers May 2.

Among the 150 lucky bloggers who have been invited to attend in person?

Our own Lisa Hendey!

Congratulations, Lisa!

Can’t think of a better person to represent us Catholic moms—and we know you’ll tell us all about it.

Ready For Lent?

advice from Benedict XVI
L'osservatore Romano

I love to read the Holy Father’s annual Message for Lent to get ideas about how to live it better.

This year’s edition is lovely—it concerns living Lent as a re-discovery of the full implications of Baptism.

It’s also especially practical and helpful in that he offers specific advice for each week of Lent, so we’re not left alone to figure out how to do that.

Here it is. Enjoy, and happy Lenting!

The Broadcasting See

read more about it

Did you know that the Vatican has had its own radio program for 80 years?

Over the decades, Vatican Radio has - among other things - helped unite war refugees and their families after World War II, and broadcast to those behind the Iron Curtain during the years of European communism. Pretty cool!

I enjoyed reading the history. You can read it, as well as the Vatican’s plans for the radio’s future, at CatholicNews.com.

True Confessions

Worth the effort

Excited talk of the new Confession App has led to a statement from the Vatican clarifying that the application is “not a substitute for the personal dialogue between the priest and the penitent required for the sacrament.”

“This app is intended to help a person prepare for the sacrament of confession,” stated Jesuit Father Federico Lombardi, director of the Vatican press office. “It is not intended... READ MORE
