OSV's Catholic Guide to the Internet

Reader's Choice Edition

Earlier this week, I was thrilled to learn that Faith & Family Live has earned a spot in the OSV Cathoilc Guide to the Internet—Reader’s choice edition.

Also on the list is our own Lisa Hendey for her site, CatholicMom.com. Congrats Lisa!

There are dozens of others—all worth checking out, and some of which I did not know of previously. It’s definitely worth browsing through the links there to find some great new resources.

Faith & Family Live is honored to have made the list. THANK YOU for reading here and for voting for us!

What Do You Hear About Health Care?

This article about Congressman Joseph Cao of Louisiana’s decision to oppose the health care plan caught my eye.

“Being a Jesuit [he was once a seminarian and continues to adhere to Ignatian spirituality], I very much adhere to the notion of social justice,” Cao said.

“I do fully understand the need of providing everyone with access to health care, but to me personally, I cannot be privy to a law... READ MORE

2009 Catholic New Media Awards

Please vote for us!

Voting has begun in the 2009 Catholic New Media Awards. Please consider registering and voting for us!

Faith and Family Live! was honored to be nominated in the following categories:

People’s Choice Blog
Best Group Blog
Most Informative Blog
Most Entertaining Blog
Best New Blog
People’s Choice Podcast
Best Group Podcast
Best New Podcast

Unfortunately, our name appears on the voting ballot in only some of those categories. (Just between you and me and the internet, I’m blaming Creative Minority Report as the fellows over there are already stooping to scare tactics and dirty politics in this year’s competition.)

With your help, Faith and Family Live! can rise above this adversity while maintaining our dignity.

Vote for dignity! Vote for us!

Small-Time Civic Duty

Local elections: yes or no?

On Election Day last November when I went to vote, I waited half an hour in line, and from what I heard about the experiences of others, I was lucky to wait such a short time.

Last evening when Bryan and I went to vote, we were the only voters there.  One of the election workers came and held the door open for us, so excited was he to see two more faces.  When they wrote our names on the log after... READ MORE

Election Day

Are you watching the coverage tonight? Or does it make you too nervous?

While driving this afternoon, I heard a reading of Walt Whitman’s poem, Election Day 1884, on the NPR show Here and Now.

I love how it compares the power of the voting masses with some of our nation’s greatest natural wonders. I thought that on this historic day, you might appreciate the imagery too.

If I should need to name,... READ MORE

Election Freebies Update

I posted yesterday about Starbucks offering a free cup of coffee to voters.

Since then, I’ve heard about many other companies offering similar freebie incentives.

But hey, guess what? It’s totally illegal. At least in Georgia.

How about you? Did you get a felony freebie today?

Free Coffee for Voting

Starbucks gets out the vote

Perhaps Starbucks isn’t trying to encourage pro-life votes with their “Free Coffee for Voters” campaign. But if you watch this clip with pro-lifers in mind, I think it’s an important reminder. With a bonus of free coffee.

When Will You Vote?

Are you joining the bandwagon of early voters?

My mother called the other day to share with me that she had just come from voting early in her home state of Mississippi, where folks over 65 are permitted to vote early for any reason.  Her call reminded me of a local columnist here in Fresno who wrote that he, too, had exercised his right to vote early because he was suffering from “Voter Fatigue” and wanted to mentally tune out the election madness.... Life Matters

In defense of one-issue voting

Any pro-lifer who always votes pro-life and is vocal about it has probably gotten flack about being a “one-issue voter.”  In our society, the term carries some negative connotations.

You can see why.  If you knew someone who always voted for the candidate whose policies he thought would bring gas prices down the most, you’d wonder a little about his priorities.

However, being a one-issue voter is... READ MORE

How to Vote and Why

The Church expects us to think seriously about the probable effect particular candidates will have on our law and culture.

Media impressions to the contrary, it’s not true that “politics” comes from “poly” meaning “many” and ticks, meaning “parasites.”

You may be tired of the trappings of political campaigns: ubiquitous ads and candidates’ families and personal lives on a dissection table. You may be exasperated by low-quality journalism, which loves to report rumors, gaffes, and polls in lieu of informing us what positions... READ MORE
