Watching Rome

Resources for the big event

Now that the Royal Wedding is over, who’s looking to Rome?

I certainly am, and I love that Lisa is praying for our Faith & Family community while she’s there. What a gift!

I read that more than 2 million people are expected to be visiting Rome this weekend for our late Holy Father’s beatification. I’m sure many, many more of us will be watching from afar.

To help us do that, the Vatican has resources on its website. Here is a calendar of events for the weekend. And for those of us who want to learn (or show our kids) more about the soon-to-be-Blessed John Paul II, this multimedia page, A Tribute to John Paul II, is loaded with information.

Nominate Your Favorites

Help support your favorite resources with a nomination

I wanted to spread the good news about a way you can help to promote your favorite Catholic website, podcast, book or social networker - the Catholicism section of About.com is inviting your nominations for this year’s Readers’ Choice Awards

Readers are invited to nominate their favorites in several categories between now and February 4, 2011.  As you can imagine, most websites and Catholic authors... READ MORE

My Rosary Top Ten

My Favorite Rosary Resources

This week has been a great blessing to me. I have really benefited from the insight and wisdom in the comments. Thank you to everyone for being so gracious and welcoming!

Today I’m collecting my top ten rosary resources for you. This list isn’t exhaustive, and I had to leave a lot of things off of it. Being a tad bit obsessive compulsive, I knew that if I didn’t draw the line at a certain number (like... READ MORE

Baby Name Statistics

I found a new resource!

As a big-time baby-name geek, I’ve spent hours on the Social Security Administration’s baby name page and on the Baby Name Wizard, looking at statistics on different names.

But as a person with a very unusual name, I’ve always been bothered by the fact that I couldn’t look up names beyond the top 1000. There was no way, as far as I could tell, to see how many US babies were named “Arwen” the year... READ MORE

News Light

Read the news and go to bed smiling

Especially since becoming a mother, I have trouble reading the news. It seems like there are so many gruesome or depressing stories, and it’s easy to get bogged down.

Recently after a quick scan of the online news, I was looking for a cheery story, anything that would make me feel a little better about the state of the world.

I Googled “happy news.” And look what I found!

Someone runs an entire website... READ MORE

Don't Want to Brave the Mall?

Take advantage of free shipping from online retailers!

Some people have their Christmas shopping done, and those people should receive a hearty pat on the back.

But for those of us who haven’t yet finished, and who (like me) dread the thought of setting foot in a mall during this crazily busy time of year, never fear! There is another option.

Over at freeshippingday.com, they’ve gathered a list of online retailers - 678 in total - who will be offering free shipping promotions tomorrow, Thursday, December 17th.

Some of them will have minimum purchase requirements in order to qualify for free shipping, but the site says that more than half will offer free shipping on all purchases. With delivery by Christmas Eve, that’s a great deal for the mall-haters among us.

Hop over to freeshippingday.com to check it out! Maybe you can get your shopping finished tomorrow.

Soup for Supper

Handy tool helps you build a recipe

It all started with this box of soup I bought yesterday for dinner.  Longtime readers will know I am the domestically-impaired member of the Faith & Family blogging team - along with being a lazy housekeeper, I’m a mess in the kitchen.

So for last night’s dinner, this box of soup caught my eye.  For less than $3, I could heat it up, serve it along with our main dish and a crusty bread, and introduce... READ MORE

Denise Jonas Speaks to Moms

Rock stars' mom is advocating for families

A few of you may have heard of this little rock band called the Jonas Brothers.  While we don’t have any of their CDs in my home, I’ve heard great things about these young men and have often wondered about their family upbringing.

I learned a little bit about Mom Jonas—aka Mrs. Denise Jonas—this week as she prepares to speak out to moms around the country as a representative of iMom.com, an organization... READ MORE

Teen Driver Safety Week

Have yours hit the road yet?

As the mom of a driving teen, I have come to know intercessory prayer even more deeply since my son Eric started driving.  If you have a teen with wheels, you know that pleading that occurs each time they grab the keys and hit the road - Saint Christopher, Eric’s Guardian Angel, Saint Sebastian and other patron saints of motorists receive my silent marching orders to intercede on Eric’s behalf while... Getting There on Your Own Two Feet

How "walkable" is your location?

We live in suburbia, and our neighborhood is a decent place to take walks for fun or exercise.  But whenever we have a particular destination in mind, we drive.  It just doesn’t seem like there’s much within walking distance.

Then this week I came across the website Walk Score, which rates the “walkability” of addresses based on the proximity of nearby services and attractions.  Our home address got... READ MORE
